  • Buying a runout Octavia vRS

Hi all, bit of a lurker here but since I'm quite likely about to join the vRS club thought I'd put a post up here and say g'day!

I just sold out of an 07 Passat TDI wagon with the intention of buying a later model Passat but got the idea in my head that a vRS might suit me better. Having driven a mate's 2011 vRS wagon (TSI) today I am now pretty much sold on the idea and will be seriously looking to buy this week. And for the first time in my life I'm looking to buy brand new if possible... Something I said I'd never do!

Problem: I can't really wait until March (or later) to get one from the new range so will be looking at the last of the MY13 stock. There are no new ones in stock in the state here that I can test drive so I'm intending on buying sight unseen and bringing it over. Which leaves me with questions...

I have heard a few people comment on the Skodas being noisier than their VW equivalent. How much noisier is the diesel than the petrol (which was fine)?

Any other major differences between the diesel and the petrol I should know about, apart from the obvious? One dealer I spoke to mentioned they do handle a bit differently due to weight differences etc.

With both the above bear in mind I'm coming from a MY08 Passat (125TDI) so would expect similar noise/performance to that but firmer ride and better handling.

What do you think is a realistic price to pay, less on roads, for a new vRS TDI wagon with leather? With the new vRS potentially being cheaper than the current model I am a bit wary of paying too much especially when (with the best prices I've been quoted) I can get an ex-demo Passat with < 3000kms for $2k more, and while that adds a lot of extra fruit for the money I still think the Octy would suit me better. I haven't started haggling much either yet.

Any other advice you could give me on must-have accessories, dealers to avoid etc? I will need to get the variable height boot floor - I need to put the dog in the back occasionally (with the rear seats down) so want it at the same level - been researching boot liners today that will protect the interior. But will gladly fit that myself if the dealer can supply the parts.

I think its really important to note that the new NE 132tsi elegance Octavia is as fast as the old tsi 1Z vRS and with the new one being a big jump in tech and design (the 1Z octy has been around since 2004, though its facelift was very extensive). I wouldn't pay much more than 35K on a newish one, if that!

I wouldn't worry about the variable height floor.

Indeed - I paid $32k for an 8 month old Petrol VRS wagon this time last year
(Given the new model is already here I would expect more downward pressure on the old model)

Can't be at fault if you are on a private road or race track. Plenty of people post on here about their racetrack shennagins without issue so I'm noty sure what the difference is.

When we have tresspassers on our private roads we can't even get the police in to sort it out. "Not our problem" they say.

I've had the TSI VRS for 3.5 years and averaged a tick over 8.3l per hundred Ks. I found the Diesel to be heavier in the front end, but still beautiful to drive and I felt its turn in was a bit better at about 7/10ths (possibly more weight over the front wheels). The TSI is a peach of an engine though, which is why I bought it over the TDI. I haven't done the sums, but with 65K on the clock, I'm not sure if I'd made up the price difference yet.

I don't think you can go wrong with either, but if you want 30% better overall economy and do a lot of Ks, the TDI is the go.

As for going for the newer model in elegance trim, yeah you should definitely check it out and drive back to back if possible, but I'm not so sure its a no-brainer decision depending on what price you can get a VRS for and when you can get one delivered. I'd think anywhere around 35k sounds fair, although I bet you aren't alone thinking about the last models in the country, so maybe there might be a slight bump in the price (and its not like they have an equivalent halo model at the moment).

Edit: On noise, yeah it can be rumbly on course chip and a bit more boomy in the wagon, but no worse than most cars (its a tomb compared to my old Mazda 3). The diesel didn't sound that much noisier than the TSI, its a pretty good unit. Probably depends on how much that sort of thing bothers you and what you expect. If you think it'll bother you, I definitely wouldn't buy one without sampling it.

Sorry to disappoint; but when I purchased mine last month I think I got the last vRS TDi wagon with factory leather in the country

My quotes from one dealer are below:
Skoda Octavia 147TSI DSG Petrol Wagon in black magic (In Showroom) $42,480.00 Drive away
Skoda Octavia 125TDI DSG Diesel Wagon in Candy white (In port of Brisbane) $41,990.00 Drive away
Skoda Octavia 125TDI DSG Diesel Wagon in black magic with leather $44,970.00

I ended up paying $38k from a different dealer for the bottom one.

Most of the colours left were black magic and candy white with one platin grey one I think. It's easy enough to get leather installed from an auto-upholsterer, the dealer will organise it if you want it included in the driveaway price (was quoted the same price as the factory extra)

I bought the diesel with only having tested a demo petrol - I loved the high end revs in the petrol; but I'm more than happy with mid-range grunt the diesel has. It's slower to 100 but that is more a marketing tool anway

Handling wise I don't notice too much difference but I only spent an hour in the TSi. My diesel handles great and I'm happy to have an economical family wagon that can bring a smile to my face when the road gets windy.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like people are pretty happy with the diesel, I'm sure I will be.

Yeah there are still a few TDI wagons with leather advertised on Carsales - not many though. Will be very surprised if I can get one for $35k! I have been offered one without leather for $36k (minus on roads) but of course they want more for the dead cow version.

Do you realize that the police could ask on which private road?

I got a quote from a reputable Brisbane upholsterer to put leather in my golf. Quote was just a touch under $2k, the leather felt better quality than the factory supplied stuff and you got to choose colours, patterns, stitch colour etc.

That's good to know mummbles - if I could get it done for that price locally, I'd most definitely look at doing that, as it would give me lots more options. Might make a few calls tomorrow.

I am waiting to hear back on a car tomorrow but if they can't come down to where I think they need to be then my dear wife (and a couple of other people) have convinced me to look at petrol models as well. Based on the mileage I currently do (not as much as I used to) I think the cost over 5 years won't be much different, unless I start driving a lot more. But there still aren't that many with leather (and gee, some of the prices are dreaming IMHO)....

They can ask all they want. I have about 500km worth that I can tell them about. Only about 100km is paved but that's enough.

There is no law about speeding on a non-public road or private property. We even had one of our campers (possibly pissed) run over another camper & the cops didn't want to know. It's a civil matter.

It depends how / where you drive. I do mostly "get in car & drive 30-50 minutes" & I average 6.7L/100km. that's in a mapped 1.8tsi. I have mates with vRS & they get great economy - as good if not better than me - especially in suburban conditions.
