On my last oil change I changed from using 0W-30 oil to 0W-40
I've done 2,500km since then, so far so good...
The engine is a little bit quieter, the oil consumption is a little lower

I am trialing a similar thing on my mates MK5 GTI. I am his resident mechanic, so i do all the oil changes etc and basic maintenance. We have used various 5w-30 VW approved oils - from Shell Helix Ultra Extra, Castrol Edge (not VW approved actually) and more recently Penrite Enviro+.
Regardless of oil brand used, the car drinks about 500-600ml per 1,000km and therefore goes through several litres of oil between each service (services done at 10k intervals because he couldnt care less) which is annoying.
Did a service on his car about a month ago and decided to try Penrite Enviro+ in a 5w-40 weight. So this oil is a little bit thicker when hot. The 5w-40 is actually about $20 cheaper than the 5w-30 so if it works out to reduce the oil consumption then its a win win situation.

Although VW 502.00/505.00 or VW 502.00/505.00/505.01 lubricants are acceptable to use on vehicles with fixed service intervals without a DPF, I believe that it's better to use VW 504.00/507.00 lubricants in direct-injection engines, as the following link will demonstrate:
Download the conference paper titled, "Lower SAPS Engine Oils - Essential components in maintaining vehicle emissions compliance", dated October 2006, and head to page 19 & 20.
In direct-injection engines, fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber, which bypasses the inlet valves and is unable to clean them. Using a low-SAPS or mid-SAPS engine oil may reduce the rate of deposit formation on the inlet valves (or so the theory goes).
Penrite state that 5w-40 is a low/mid SAPS oil and is designed for use in modern direct injection engines.
Looks much the same stuff as the Enviro+ 5W-30 which is 504/507
Lucas, my TSI engine was drinking 750ml per 1000km and that's now down to about 500ml per 1000km (maybe/approx)
My 09 vRS has never used a drop between oil changes. I believe the cost for VW 504/507 approval from VAG is about $650 K for 3 years. Nice money earner for VW just to put a stamp on your bottle. I m sure plenty more oils meet the criteria but refuse to be blackmailed.

Hard to believe it costs that much but in any case they would not be the only organisation running a profitable certification scheme - halal certification is an excellent example

Has anyone tried the penrite racing 10w-40? VW502.00 oil.
The racing oils have high zinc and molybdenum content which will kill your expensive CAT
They are good oils for sure - best on the track with no cat (hey that rhymes!)

Yep I think oil usage in these cars is a roulette wheel....ours uses a little sometimes, mainly due to my wife doing shorter trips than when it was my car. But a friend with pretty much the same vintage does higher kms and its always used more than mine.
Just updating my previous post (below). The 5w-40 oil we used in my friends Mk5 GTi seems to have made little to no difference in oil consumption on his car. His car seems to use about 1L every 2,000-2,500km or so. He sms'd me on the weekend saying the check oil light came on and its only been about 6-7 weeks since i did his oil change.
So the 5w-40 at this stage seems to be of no advantage other than the fact that its about $20 cheaper than the 5w-30 (Penrite Enviro+). So from a cost point of view, its ok - but little to no difference in oil consumption rate.
