118TSI Daytime running lights coded at dealer

Hi guys,

I've been looking on here for the answers and can't find them. I have just returned from Richmond Skoda in VIC getting warranty work (still have to go back for clutch pack replacement on DSG) and when I dropped it off in the morning asked them to code the DRL's, cornering fog lamps and the sweeping speedo, service manager said no probs as they were meant to do it 3 weeks ago during the 30k service but "forgot". I pick up the car today and they said everything done.

When I asked if the lights were done too he said yes. I go out to check and the DRL's aren't on. I asked him if they coded them and he said yes, i'll turn them on and then proceeds to turn on the parkers and tell me they are the DRLs. Long story short and me explaining to the service techs, sales man and Sales manager for Skoda, that the DRL's are the corner lights but on during the day and they then say it's not on Octavia, only Fabia and Superb.

When I told them i'd seen it done so I know you can do it, they said it's not factory so they can't code it, yet they managed to code my cornering lights after I said that he changed his wording and said they don't code after market, again, you just did.

I said I would try and find out where in VASS that they go to code it so I am here to ask the knowledgeable folks of this forum, where in the VASS is this done, both the DRL and speedo sweep as they can't seem to manage how to do it on their own.

Also I don't mean how to do this with VAGCOM although if someone in Melbourne wants to take the time to let me come over and do this, that would be great!

Oh and they also said even if they did code it, if they ever did a flash of the ECU they would have to re-code it again.

get someone with a VCDS cable to do this for you.

you can use fog lights as DRLs. but this depends on your CECM.

all these functions are not related to ECU tuning. nor are they stored there

Not in NSW, you can be fined for inproper use of your fog lights.

"It is necessary however that the correct lights be used. Fog lights and high beam are inappropriate and parking lights ineffective whilst driving. Until specially designed DRLs are installed, low beam headlights are the most effective way to make your vehicle more visible."

The driver of a vehicle must not:
(a) use any fog light fitted to the vehicle unless the driver is driving in fog, mist or under other atmospheric conditions that restrict visibility.

Maybe so but obviously not legally.

Lots retro fit HID's as well but one day the law may wake up.

There are some manufacturers who define the WAN+ER lights as "Other" lights to try to circumvent the rules.

Doesnt stop the idiots from blinding you with poorly focused "Suns " blazing all over the place.

Or making you wonder when following them if its the brake lights or the idiot lights all lit up at the rear.

foglights do not have any DRL lighting properties.
the throw angle and reflector pattern of foglight is not designed for DRLs purposes at all.

that's the reason why car manufacturers use the highbeams at 40% power, or dedicated DRLs.
the octavia (non vRS), superb & passat have DRLs next to the foglight housing. they don't use fogs as DRL.

This is exactly what I was trying to tell the dealer mechanics, the 118TSi has DRL next to the dog lights that unless they are coded do absolutely nothing at all.

They still didn't believe me that they are DRLs. These are the lights I want done. Anyone had luck getting a dealer to do it? I don't know anyone close to me that has a Ross tech and VAGCOM.

well, VW australia called me back today and advised that the technical department said my 118TSi isnot optioned with the DRL's from teh factory and that the globes are just there as it's easier than removing them. They also said that the wiring to the lights and the coding to the control module would not be there as well.

This is strange as I have seen them turned on and thought most of the 118's in Oz were pretty much optioned the same. I am still thinking a VCDS investigation may be needed. now to find someone willing to help...

i had to convince them (vw service centre) that engine in my RS was the same as that in the mk6 GTi, and NOT the of the mk5 GTi!!!!

Thanks mate that would be much appreciated. I'm going to check today and see if there is indeed wiring to those bulbs as I think there is but the person on the phone couldn't find the info on how to code it.

I was looking at a VRS But it was a little too much of a stretch when buying 2 cars. I agree with you though, they should have integrated the fogs and DRLs a little better on it.

So it appears VW know jack **** about Skoda. I checked the fog lights and DRL's today and the wiring is fully connected to the DRL's. Stupid mofos. If you can still supply with some coding that would be awesome, I have a member from here that is going to help me out but he has a Jetta.
