  • Sold my pre FL RS - do I replace with current RS?

    Hi All
This is a forum where I will probably get a biased response (we wouldn't be posting here if we didn't appreciate RS Skodas)... I've just sold my pre FL RS wagon and within 24hrs test drove a demo RS wagon that is very well priced. My old car was a manual (my choice) and the new car is DSG (wife's choice ). Given our next car needs to be an auto and previously I was 'allowed' to indulge in a manual - are there any other cars on the market the forum members think i should test drive prior to simply updating to another RS. The lack of options for manual performance mid size wagons last time narrowed it down very quickly. (didn't think I'd like the DSG but I did....)
    Thanks !

Sold my pre FL RS - do I replace with current RS?

I dont think there are any real other options for a good quality, subtle yet sporty mid size wagon with a good engine and a sub $40k price.

I was almost going to suggest holding off for the new Focus ST wagon - but its manual only apparently.

Cant think of anything else to suggest.

There's a focus ST wagon coming? I've got the current hatch in the back of my head still as a potential next car, but the new RS Octavia will be stiff competition against it. I've still got another 2 odd years so plenty of things can change yet.

          Depends on the budget.

We seriously looked at the previous model Mazda 6 (last year's model). We were ready to sign a contract on the diesel turbo since it seemed more responsive than the auto petrol. But thankfully we stumbled across the Skoda for the right price. Also looked at the Liberty but I think the current model is a bit ugly and it was more expensive.

If you want a quick performance orientated mid size auto wagon and money isn't a problem and new RS4 has just been released. But for a new car under 40k it's hard to beat the Skoda.

ST wagon isn't coming to Australia, unfortunately.

The thing is, no other mid-size car offers as much performance as the RS for the price, be it manual or auto. There used to be quite a selection; the Ford Mondeo XR5 Turbo, Volvo S40/V50 T5, Subaru Liberty GT (still available but $60k), VW Passat R36 and so on, but they've been cut. The only sporty mid-sizers that remain are the aforementioned Liberty GT, Octy RS, Superb V6 (but that's too big), Passat V6, Peugeot 508 GT, new Mazda6 (not that sporty in engines - the 129kW 2.2 really goes though - but a great chassis), EcoBoost 2.0 turbo Mondeo or spending much more and going a German. IMO the Octy RS is too old and it's a shame the new model isn't here yet. Other than that I guess you're limited to the hot hatches or maybe even a Fabia RS Wagon?

I tried the Mondeos and ...you can only get a diesel wagon in the high spec level!
The RS Octavia drives so much better!
                  Like seriously better.....

Hey, your yellow wagon seems so well taken care of! and so few kms!...you didnt drive it much?

It's even more difficult when your partner demands a manual gearbox! Mazda don't offer one any more. Neither do VW or Peugeot. The only option is the dowdy Octavia.

If only Skoda offered the Superb wagon with a manual box......

The only thing that really piques my interest is the new 320i wagon, which will be available with a manual box in Australia.

I forgot about that, the Ford PowerShift does not handle high kw or nm
I knew the Mondeo was heavy and not very fuel economic

Where does this "under $40k" figure come from?
Last time I checked, a well optioned Octavia VRS costs ~46k (seen QLD dealers listing it for $50k)

Martin - I think the under $40k was raised earlier in the thread. It is spot on as I'm looking at drive away for under that... One of the main reasons Im tempted to go another RS, especially in race blue with red stitch interior.
To jakes point it is not too far removed from my old one which was brand spanking over 4 yrs ago - the flashy media unit is really the only glaring difference.
Tigger - sir camels new ride was one pampered car. I consider the 44,000km I put on it as a 'running in' service I provided for him.
The new Mazda looks good but I'm not sure it's super value, move up from the base model and it starts to get a bit pricey.

I think unfortunately, you sold the prior one just a tad too early, but if it means getting a good deal on an outgoing model and you are happy with that go for it. As a general rule, most cars should be able to be bought for the list price excluding onroads...it's become a bit more murky trying to find that list price since the all inclusive rules came in. A wagon RS without any options should be well under 40k without any issue.
