Paid well under 40 for ours, with 5 years warranty. Although the only option it has is front parking sensors. A sunroof would have been nice, but wasn't too fused. Didn't you got a ripper deal Martin?

Ours does too. However the red stitching should really be green!

I paid $32k for an 8 month old 2012 VRS wagon with 14k on the clock (remaining manufacturers warranty and extended warranty)
It does not have a sunroof, electric seats, reversing camera or red stiching, otherwise very well equiped...

Looking at car sales dot com, a new 2012 Octavia VRS ranges from $40k to $50k (shocking)
There are a few 2012 models with ~2500km on the clock going for $40k
There are a few 2011 models with ~2000km on the clock going for $35k~$37k
There is a 2010 model with 13k on the clock going for $34k

I guess its years ago now, but in late 2008 I paid 36k driveaway for a manual race blue hatch that had just arrived with sunroof and front sensors. They also ended up giving me another 2k to either add to the tradein or take off the price. Std 3 yr warranty, back then there wasn't really an option to increase it. Skoda did free onroads as their end of year promo in Oct when I bought and the new FL was still a way off, the diesel had just appeared as well as the DSG models.

You could take a look at the Kia Sorento, in either Si or SLi varients... I wouldn't bother with the V6, though. Uncouth and thirsty - the diesel is where its at.

My vRS TDI manual cost me $46k, in Dec 2011. Just before the 5yr warranty sale. Like... Literally, just before. No options at all.

My vRS TSI DSG6 cost me $44k, in Jun 2010. i factory ordered with the optional xenons & front sensors. they (skoda aus) had just made the columbus & rear wiper no cost options, across the RS range - so i did't have to to pay any extra on those

Indeed - sub $40k for a well equiped VRS is not realistic

I would love to have the Xenons - I assume they are self leveling and auto cleaning?

In hatch form with manual you could either have DSG or Xenons for sub 40k, but possibly not both. Sunroof and Front parking sensors definitely. I suspect front parking sensors will soon be standard as they are on pretty much every competing model these days. A wagon will push it up more though.

I am very curious as to whether Skoda will push prices up or bring them down, but can't see them leaving them as they are currently. Mazda have overpriced themselve once again with the new model launch, so depending on what they do would also affect Skoda. You can bet the Jetta will also play a big part, they won't want the Skoda undercutting it.

"In hatch form with manual you could have DSG" - that does not make any sense

People have been buying both manual and DSG Octavia's around $44k~$46k which is in line with current market prices

Sorry I wrote one thing and changed it, a man TSI hatch is easily obtainable under 40k. A hatch with either DSG or Xenons, but unlikely both could also squeeze under. Before the list price was confused by driveaway pricing, it was around $37,700, wagon was $1k more.

I just pulled up the driveaway price locally for Melbourne which was $42,156.00* So since the driveaway pricing came in, Skoda suddenly up the onroads to $5k (was around $2k when separate)....something is not right there. Has anyone seen the price before onroads or have they been silently increasing it and hiding it in the driveaway price? I asked about pricing a bit over a year ago and not counting the sunroof mine has, to swap over to another manual was well under 40k. They had just pushed the price up slightly due to MDI being standard, and even with the Columbus that hadn't pushed them up so much.

Bugger me, that's a sensational price for DSG. I paid $41k drive away for a manual, leather and sunroof last October.
