  • was reading the new mk3 octavia user manual, and noted some interesting things:-
    1. Traffic sign recognition
Traffic sign recognition allows traffic signs with maximum speeds/no overtaking recognised by the system to be shown in the instrument cluster display.
Traffic sign recognition works on the basis of the data captured by the camera and is only able to show traffic signs which are in the camera's viewing range

    2. Adaptive HeadLights
The system automatically adjusts the cone of light in front of the vehicle based on the vehicle speed, whether the windscreen wipers are in use, the rear fog lights, and data from Infotainment Navigation.

    3. KEYSS

    4. 12-Volt power socket: in the front centre console and in the boot

    5. 230-Volt power socket at centre console at rear.

    6. Front centre console: Multimedia holder
You can use this holder to store e.g. a mobile phone, MP3 player or similar devices.

    7. "Real" Handbrake

    8. Park-Assist

    9. No mention of "adaptive" cruise-control

    10. START-STOP system

    11. Driving Mode Selection - Normal; Sport; Eco; Individual - this mode is provided for making custom settings to the vehicle systems (steering, engine, dynamic cornering lights, air conditioning)

    12. Lane Assist

    13. USB and AUX inputs or MEDIA IN input located above the stowage compartment in the front centre console

    14. Driver’s knee airbag

    15. front & rear side airbags

    • I've seen most of those mentioned in press stories and I'm sure I read somewhere about adaptive cruise control as well.
The sign recognition system is just the first step to vehicles having some sort of RFID that will receive signals from roadside transponders and automatically limit speeds.
Finally the MDI appears to have left the VW group and that should be a day for national celebration by owners imo.
Of course unfortunately what options are available and what Skoda Australia chose to fit or offer are actually two different things.

yup....me too. i've read that the adaptive cruise control will b available (as an option), however there was no mention whatsoever in the manual.

+1 on the options being made available. fingers crossed that the dude at vw aus hq is in a good mood when ticking the boxes!!!

              • Some impressive stuff there. I wonder how Lane Assist, Multi Collision Assistant and Driver Activity Assistant would work on the hoon I saw other day driving erratically - speeding, tailgating, zig zagging across lanes and even passing cars in the emergency lane. lol

                • And describes the adapative cruise control we discussed a couple of days ago.

Some of the features such as the flashing brake lights would probably be illegal in some states. I think Victoria changed their rules some time ago to allow brake lights that get brighter as you press harder but I'm not sure flashing lights would be legal at this stage.

I wonder how good the sign cameras will be with Australian signs. I suspect that it won't know what a Koala symbol saying next 10km means.

                  • the good thing is Australia follows EU safety closely, so those laws may change soon as more cars are delivered with those features.

flashing indicators and brake lights are available now in our cars, just not turned on.

                    • Drifting slightly off-topic, aftermarket brake lights that fitted inside the rear window (usually one either side) were a popular accessory in the eighties before high mounted central brake lights became standard. Some versions flashed when the brakes were applied, but these didn't stay around for very long, probably because (I believe) they were/are illegal in NSW.

When I was riding around Europe back in 1985 on my then brand new BMW K100RS, most drivers would switch their hazard lights on if they pull up quickly at the back end of a traffic snarl on a motorway - pretty handy when confronted with a wall of traffic at 160+ km/h on a German autobahn! I think a lot of European vehicles now include automatic hazard light activation when the brakes are applied heavily.

Definitely loving the look of the new Octavia! I'm a big fan of the clean, uncluttered style.

Looks good in my opinion...a few nifty features too

"In addition to the features in the new Octavia hatch.....the new Combi has other new smart solutions on board: examples include the coat rack or the remote fold-down function for the rear-seat backrest. The folding passenger seat makes transporting very long objects much easier. There is space for a luggage compartment rollo cover and roof bars under the adjustable and retractable variable boot floor. "
