There is no aerodynamic reason for one to be there. The back window accumulates no more dirt or dust than a typical three box sedan like a Commodore or Falcon. Conventional two box hatch backs like say Corollas or Mazda 3s need a wiper because dirt is sucked up from the road onto the window by the vortex created from air flowing over the roof. Three box cars have the road dirt accumulate on the rear lights and back of the boot because of this effect this is what happens on the Octavia hatch.
The only reason I can see it being there is marketing and customer perception.
Our Audi S3 always has a filthy rear window and the rear wiper gets used a lot on my Octavia which is largely driven on the same roads the rear window says relatively clean and is only really affected by airborne dust and dirt landing on it when it's parked.

            Everyone has different experiences Kiwi.

My Octavia hatch gets a filthy rear window & I really wish it had the optional wiper/washer (to help see behind me when I park the car). Catch22 situation

              mine is always filthy.
even more saw after driving in light rain/showers.

i had actually forgotten to option it while i was ordering, but luckily for me, the rear wiper became standard (no longer an option for liftback) from MY11 models
              i'm so glad.

No more filthy than any standard car would. If you get a filthy rear window on an Octavia hatch you would get the same thing on a Commodore or Falcon or Honda Accord. The Octavia does not need a wiper just because it's a hatch and the shape aerodymanically is the same as many modern three box shapes.

As above sedans. Box one is the bonnet, box two is the passenger compartment and box three is the boot area.
Hatches and SUVs are only two box (not boot obviously).
                      Vans are one box.

                          • the newer 1.4tsi sounds promising. It's not a bad engine for a daily driver, really.

                              Right.
So I get a dirty back window because I'm a lazy sod.
My wife gets a dirty back window on her wagon which is the fault of aerodynamics & not because she is a lazy sod.
Our Calais didn't get a dirt back window because baby Jesus came while we were asleep & cleaned it for us.

Thanks for clearing that up for me
