    • Now I am very confused!?!?

Skoda has put out information that sales were up in Australia by 100% in March

March 2011: Best month ever for Skoda | Easier

While The Motor Report is saying that VFACTS has Skoda selling only 80 cars for march!!

What the hell is the truth of the matter???

        • "Other individual non-European markets also experienced very positive development in March: Standing out in particular are Skoda’s sales in Turkey +97.4 percent, in Israel +21.8 percent, and in Australia with a 100% growth."

          100% growth from when?
If they are referencing against March 2010 that means they sold 160 cars in March 2011. The 100% figure is totally meaningless with reference detail.

          • 100% growth against a very small base doesn't mean a lot, but at least it's a positive sign and they're moving in the right direction. They seem to have really ramped up the marketing lately, with TV campaigns and the footy sponsorship. And all the reviews are positive. If only Aussie consumers were more open minded! Although with such impressive growth in other markets, I can't see Australia climbing the pecking order in terms of supply priority, so I doubt sales volumes will increase dramatically anytime soon.

            • 100% sales increase is a huge success which ever you look at it. However, the information was from Skoda HQ press release reporting sales. I think vfacts actually reports registrations. Therefore I suspect we compare two different sets of numbers- with one lagging behind the other.

Agree with Damo105, with Skoda waiting lists getting longer in bigger markets for them, they will not be hard pressed to look after a market where they sell around 2000 cars a year. However, I have seen lately a greater marketing effort too; more on-line ads, exposure in media and so on. I think Skoda Australia is trying to launch new models here with an increased effort, which is good.

              • For anyone interested, I am posting sales stats for first 3 months of 2011.

406 cars sold, which is not earth-shatterig by any means but reasonable as it is on par with for example Mini. Great result for Audi, outselling BMW. VW little bit sluggish comparing it with last year though.

                • I wouldn't want to be in the sales department at Broadmeadows at the moment.

The figures also illustrate why the Amarok ute is so critical to VAG. Toyota sell more Hilux's than VW sell all passenger cars combined. If VW can seriously dent Hilux sales they will be in a strong position to overtake Toyota world wide.

I suspect a vast majority of Hilux utes may go to fleet sales. They are pretty conservative sort of buyers. I hope Amarok will do well though. It looks great, it has the best economy in class and is backed by German engineering. However, at the end of the day, it is made in Argentina (I think) and it is a new product. I hope VW gonna make sure there are no quality issues which may haunt the brand later on.

It is pity with Ford. I always felt that Falcon was a better car than Commodore.

Judging by the huge numbers of Great Wall utes hitting the road I suspect that the small business market has well and truly gotten over being conservative in lieu of being frugal.
At the moment VW Amarok advertising is aimed at the recreational 4WD market but I suspect that at the appropriate time (I'm thinking the end of the FY 2011/12) the pitch will move very much towards that trade market and pricing or incentives will be adjusted accordingly.

                              • May 2011 sales numbers

According to vfacts 171 Skodas were sold in May 2011 ( http://www.caradvice.com.au/121809/n...ures-may-2011/ ). Thats not a bad number and Skodas seems to be a steady, even though not very fast improver in sales department numbers.

Skoda company worldwide seems to be having good sales year too, having reported 20% increase y/y. The biggest improver being Yeti (55% y/y increase) at 6600 units for the month.
