  • Octavia or Jetta?

My Octavia 118TSI was written off and I am considering the VW Jetta, either the 118TSI or the 147TSI. Any thoughts?

Also, if I go the Octavia 118TSI again are the xenon lights worth the extra money and for that matter the sports suspension. Not really interested in the rs model.

Not sure why you would look at the 147 but not the RS. The RS has all the good bits and is cheaper as well as having the manual option. Having said that with the new Jetta out and the new Octavia still coming, harder to say. I still prefer the hatch over the narrow Jetta boot opening.

I'd say the Octavia because it's more practical, comes with more as standard, (especially the RS with its 18s, half leather/alcantara trim, heated seats, sat-nav - if you ordered a 118TSI with sports suspension it would have a longer wait than a new RS) and is better value for money. It's the same car otherwise but it'd be kinda ironic that your username is Skoda if you had a Jetta .

But in all seriousness I really hope whatever you buy doesn't get hurt again Skoda...

As resident lighting expert, I'm telling you to get the xenon's.

I realise this has basically no authority over you, but... Do it. You won't regret it. ^_^

i was seriously looking at the jetta 147 to prior to getting the RS.
          the RS won pants down
purely for value for money. by the time i optioned a jetta with the same kit that i would get on the RS, i was looking at almost $55k driveaway!!!
plus the jetta was way "outdated" back then (2 yrs ago, before the new jetta was released).

i'm not sure what the pricing is like now for the new jetta........

not to mention, with the new jetta, i can't clearly differentiate it from the passat - they both look identical!!
"is that the new passat? nah its jetta....no wait, its a passat! doh, that was a jetta"
i need to read the badge on the back now!!!
          mind u....they both look nice

as for xenons - u won't regret it. u'll b glad u got it.....no doubt. don't forget that they're dynamic (turn with the direction) too.
would've been better if they were bi-xenon

I would go the Jetta, merely for a change.
Also, its the brand new shape, where as the Octavia is now OLD,and will be replaced soon.

New Jettas are becomming quite popular, and look awesome on the roads.

              Octavia RS for sure!
You can get the wagon or the sedan and you get all the goodies as the Vw equivalent but for less.

If i couldn't ge the Tiguan i would have gone straight for the vRS Octavia.

Having owned a MY10 147TSI Jetta, and the better half having an RS, it's a no brainer for me. The RS is more fun to drive, packaged better, and to be honest, the Jetta is boring to look at, sit in.

118TSI Jetta is the 1.4twincharge isn't it? Given the oil consumption issues of that engine, I'd stay away.

Jetta 147TSI is DSG only? Is that an issue?

I have the 118TSI M6 hatch. If I had to go shopping tomorrow, I'd probably cast my eye over the 118TSI wagon or a Passat wagon.

I'd also check out the Honda Accord & the Citroen C5 (they are price competitive with a 118TSI hatch these days), Mazda6 & used Renault Megane hatch.

edit: +1 for xenons. I have aftermarket & love them. OEM would be twice as good.

FWIW I know a Golf owner who just had their engine, 118tsi twinspark, replaced under warranty with only 40,000 odd klms on it.

Twincharge is 132kW or so... So it'd be badged as 132TSI, wouldn't it?

The new Jetta is very plain and ugly in my opinion. I would definetly get the Octavia instead.

If you can avoid the 118TSI (because of the ongoing engine issues) i would as well.

My cousin has told me some quite awful horror stories with some current VAG engines, funny how not as much is mentioned on this forum, but enough to say he said be glad I have the TFSI 147kw engine....so its not just the 118 kicking around with issues. I quite like teh 118 that was used in the pref facelift, I'm guessing the same one is still used rather than the twin turbo setup slipping in now.

Thanks for all your replies and input.

After I posted last night I had decided to go for the Octavia 118TSI (over the Jetta Highline 147TSI) fairly well optioned up - leather, f&r sensors, xenon lights etc - very similar to the Jetta. I was told there is a wait of approx 6 months for both models.

Then today I received a phone call today to tell me a Jetta with the specs I was after had been located and I could have it in 2 weeks - so I thought 2weeks for the Jetta vs 6 months for the Octavia mmm.

So, sorry to disappoint some of you Skoda-ites but I have defected for awhile. I would be interested to see what the new model looks like - you never know.

Does anyone want my name lol.
