Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

had the rattle looked at today, while getting my 1st service (15k) done, and the summary is:-
    1. Technician couldn't replicate the sound (wastegate rattle on acceleration).
so when i went to pick up the car after it was serviced, i tried to replicate it with him in the car, and wat do u know.....
i could barely hear it. i tried - best i could get was a faint rattle told him the service must've done something.
he insisted they didn't touch it or too anything.
he also mentioned that with the gti, the rattle could b clearly heard - no sign of it on mine.
    2. i mentioned the TPI. they made it clear to me that it ONLY applies to VW vehicles. it does not apply to skoda vehicles...full stop.
i asked why not, considering the gti and rs have the same engine and both are from the same VwAG family -
they said the gti and rs don't have the same engine.....full stop!! i couldn't b bothered arguing......
    3. while going for a drive with the techo, he mentioned if had to buy a car again, he'd get the rs over the gti -
because u get the same kit, plus extras for much less. value for money and practically over the gti.
he also mentioned that he found the build & finish of the octavias were much better than the golfs.

so despite vwag supplying the same EA888 engine K03 turbo (source of the wastegate rattle) to vw (with ecu map a) and to skoda (with ecu map b) - vw lennock have been instructed by VW aus not to help the skoda folk. Boooooo to VW aus!
i could go out and buy the clip myself from ecs tuning. but i'd rather not cause i don't want to potentially risk my warranty.

    ...oh well, rant over

I doubt it will risk your warranty, if something happens to your car, just unclip it before you take it in! They will never know... That's if you can't live with the noise. My wastegate is so loud the technician who drove my car said "it sounds like you're towing a metal cage trailer from inside the car."
I was driving away from work the other day and my boss phoned me after I left and said "I think there's something wrong with your piece of crap Skoda, it sounds effed!" I was like "thanks, I know..."

All things being on time, it will be fixed early next week. Finally.

I've just returned from the dealer after getting my wastegate clip fitted under warranty. Only waited about half an hour for the fix. Can say after driving back to work that the clip has made the rasping/rattling sound about 60-70% quieter. It's still there if you listen for it and have the stereo off, but it's now more of a muffled growl. Love that my Skoda doesn't sound like the engine is about to explode anymore! Thanks again to the guys at Trivett Blacktown for sorting this out.

after doing a bit more research, it turns out the TPI only applies to "CBFA, CCTA" engines.

despite the skoda rs and golf gti having the same EA888 petrol engine, they have different variants.
the skoda rs has the "CCZA" variant. well atleast mine does.
its shown on the build plate, or in the boot with the option code sticker.

i'm not sure which one the the gti has - either the "CCTA" or "CBFA".
that would explain why vw didn't come to the table to have my issue addressed.

That makes some more sense now, still annoying though! Might talk to trivet when I take the Skoda in for some warranty stuff

hmmm...that's interesting and confirms my previous thoughts - "there is no difference (mechanically) between the mk6 gti and the facelift octavia rs".
its only software (ecu) that is different.

ROW (rest of the world) MK6 and A3 2.0 TSI Engines
                    CCZA - A3
                    CCZB - MK6

CCZ denotes the european mechanical structure.
A and B denote a software calibration change for different power levels.
                    A has 200hp, B has 210hp.

TSI Trans CCZA ROW 2.0 TSI 147kW (200 PS), 280Nm
TSI Trans CCZB ROW 2.0 TSI 154kW (210 PS), 280Nm

funny how a software callibration can deny eligibility for a TPI fix.

Mine can be rather annoying sometimes too because I mostly get it at part throttle around town. Seems to be getting slightly worse, but its hard to tell.

I'm about 5 months from service, but I think I might put the hard word on the dealer and threaten to service elsewhere.. Make sense to me that a cheap clip is a way for dealers to get servicing customers through the door. Hopefully some more people will go through the pain and it'll be normal by then. Its obviously not a world ending problem, but its the little things, right?

Just got back from the dealer with the magic clip fitted under warranty.

The noise is much much better, but the real test will be tomorrow morning when the car is cold.

The dealer - Brisbane Prestige - pushed hard with Skoda Australia to pay for the clip/fitting as a gesture of goodwill. Skoda Aus initially did not allow the fix due to the issues outlined above. I think Skoda Aus will never issue a TPI for a non-safety related issue while they sell so few cars in Aus. Paradoxically they will never sell many cars in Aus if their current owners do not sing their praises.

Nevertheless, Brisbane Prestige did a great job as a non-VW aligned dealer to get Skoda to agree to this fix.

Very interesting daft1014. I am the other Brisbane Prestige customer who has had the repair authorised by Skoda Australia. That was a while back. I called the service manager three weeks ago and he told me he didn't have the clip but would chase it up and call me back. I have coincidentally caled again earlier and now i know he has done yours will be on his case! Glad it has made a difference.

Pity they have no interest in my furry seat or deformed side bolster! Has anyone got a seat cover replaced because of the fluffing issue? It happens routinely in the UK but Skoda Australia seem very tight when it comes to warranty work. Something to bear in mind for prospective purchasers.

RE the rattle definitely give them a call... Adrian gave me the impression a few weeks ago that he was given approval to proceed with the fix for at least my car and another customer... He has been at the bottom of a very long VW waiting list but I was under the impression that he was ordering two? It's been months since he told me he has approval, but I didn't want to say anything till it was on the car...

I also have the furry seat. They told me its normal wear and tear... I reckon its BS. With so few customers I can appreciate why they are tight, but at least two of my relatives/friends have disregarded Skoda and bought other brands recently due to the "issues" I've had... A bit of goodwill goes a long way.

Re the furry seat, get a shaver out and the issue is pretty much gone. I found it was a certain pair of pants causing mine as well. Someone on here I do recall getting new material a year or so back, but you'll have to hunt. Mine hasn't really got significantly worse since the first year so must have been something I was doing. My wife now has the Skoda and has diamontes on her jeans, I warned her so she sits on a towel so they don't catch. Velcro on pockets is very bad as is studs on pants.
