Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

      Whoa thread revival ...

Anyone get a Jetex cat back recently ?

It's for a 1Z Octavia VRS FL here and looking to get some more noise out of the car (want deeper grown and DSG pops) and it looks like this is the one that fits it ... approx $1,000 delivered from the UK

Anyone know how much the APR cat back costs nowadays ? The AU website has changed slightly

The APR gear is horrendously expensive. You would be nearly twice the price of the Jetex if you went with APR.

Your other option would be to have one of several well known custom exhaust shops in Sydney make a custom catback for you using stainless pipe, mandrel bends and good quality mufflers like Mangaflow. Then you can choose your tail pipe design too. This would be cheaper than the Jetex system (probably around $800 if using good quality mufflers and a resonator in stainless steel).

Are they are pretty good with swapping over resonators / mufflers too until you find something you like ?

          Edit

Found this pic from another thread...

Have we got 2 mufflers or is the centre one a resonator ? And ... which would be better to piss off to get some DSG pops happening (with no drone, ideally).

The little round one in the picture above is a resonator. You can see how much smaller the aftermarket one is compared to the factory exhaust. Most people remove the resonator to give some extra DSG pops, but just bear in mind that removal of the resonator can result in droning which is rather annoying.

I am specifically trying to avoid droning .. but res deletes invariable lead to 50% of owners saying no drone and the other 50% saying yes there is drone!

Do you know if the stock system (left) has 2 mufflers ? Or is the top left in the pic a "suitcase" shape muffler/resonator, which is replaced by the round resonator which you've pointed out?

Drone is subjective dont forget - some peoples hearing is worse than others. Some people may have a degree of industrial deafness due to their work or lifestyle (eg deafness from loud music) and may not hear something that you will hear. Its something that you will need to decide for yourself with your own ears.

A resonator is really just a small muffler with a straight through design and they are normally round. The stock system looks to me like a medium sized muffler in the middle then a larger one at the back. The term suitcase muffler does not really apply in this situation - have a look at the exhaust on a MK6 GTI or R and the terms suitcase refers to the large rear muffler at the back of the car.

That's a good point regarding the drone ... lot's of situations where the identical mod has 2 differing opinions !

It would just be ideal if you can sit in someone's car and you pick the exact exhaust combination for your own. But that would just be too easy.

Thanks for the explanation .. it all makes more sense now .. (though in this pic, what they call resonators, I would probably call mufflers).

Just don't know why Skoda decided to put 2 such mufflers in there, when the GTIs that they are sound good stock .... (slightly different exhaust setup, I know).

This is the exhaust i have on my GTI jsut for reference. CTS Turbo MK6 GTI 3" Cat Back Exhaust

It sounds great to me (nice deep bassy sound with no drone and you can still talk with passengers / talk on bluetooth / listen to music without any issues) but it is pretty quiet from inside the car due to the sound deadening the car has. From the outside, the exhaust is actually alot louder (not obnoxious, but definitely louder than how it seems to be from the inside). To be honest, i could probably handle the exhaust being 10-20% louder without it bothering me.

You other option is to go for a drive down to Canberra and visit Darkshadow to listen to how his Octy RS sounds.

Yes, I like that very much. Quite loud on their vid too in your link, but acceptable. Nothing for the VRS though (or mk5 jetta which has the the most similar undercarriage).

Haha yes, but I think he's gone all out with the APR kit .. I am sure the wife won't notice the $5k missing or the extra noise.

I went to the local exhaust shop yesterday and the guy there said to remove the rear mufflers all together to gain more note. Quoted $220, and said if I didnt like it he would be able to refit the originals. Any body gone this route?
