Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • I've had a Bluefin in my 2008 TDI for a few years and just put a Racechips Response Control ($299 with free overnight delivery) throttle control in.

Simple install, just unplug the throttle pedal connector and plug the Racechip between the two. Route the cable discretely and stick the control somewhere you would like it.

I don't know if it does anything other than just change the 'curve' of how the accelerator is applied, but it's quite dramatic at the extreme settings. Anything from glacial response and extremely slow acceleration in Eco2 mode right through half a dozen modes to very zippy in Sport2 mode. Around mid level and a couple up would be most used. Only had one short drive so far, but combined with the Bluefin and my Haldex sport controller set on Race is a lot of zip on dirt roads.

I was tempted to get one called EDrive Advance 4, but wasn't sure of the quality of that - it seems a bit more versatile - and about $100 cheaper. There's some even cheaper ones around of dubious quality that supposedly can cause trouble with the car.

So it's been a week with the chip and overall it's good to go.

So I paid $1000 all up installed you could probably get it cheaper as the Aus site has them for $699 and you could put in yourself but mine was through the dealer so I can take it back if there are issues plus they reset the computer and emission controls to match and it's set up for my indavidual car.
Power is 213kw 420nm. I know some direct port tunes are getting more but I can pull this out in 30min and take in for warranty work if needed.
The app works fine. Though there's not much to it. You can choice between 3 modes. You can set a timer so it only kicks in after a pre set time.
Driving wise you notice the difference. It really works well in sport or when you flick to manual mode. It's defiantly a big boost.
However when on normal it can be a bit funny only because it will wants to change up quick and if you decide to stab it the power increase is a little much for it. you will get the extra kick but unless you push the pedal to the floor it will Change up and feel a littl abrupt. Having said that you can still drive around normally without an issue and as I'm sure most of you would do anyway flip it to manual or sport to have some fun.
The tip I would give is that to use the app you need to scan the barcode of the unit before you plug it in. My dealer hide it away then told me the barcode was on the packet. Coincidently the bar code came up as a seat Leon. So I have to pull some things back off to get the could. I then placed the unit in a better spot.

Be very very careful with plug-in chips, as they trick the ECU into giving the engine different timing and fuel levels, by faking the temperature and sensor readings.
The benefit of a proper tune is that the ECU knows exactly whats going on and can still pull it back into a more "safe mode" (read: NOT limp mode) if it has to, whereas with a chip the ECU is thinking to itself "I've done all I can and its still not right! Whats going on?!"

Plus one. So many people go this way without really knowing the risks. It might still run for thousands of KM and not have a problem but still be shortening the life of the motor considerably.

Get a proper tune or don't tune at all.

            Happy days

Not so. A lot of the time when the Ecu is tuned it removes a lot of the safe modes that are in the factory tune And adds it's own higher limits. There are pros and cons for both. I've used both and had no dramas. This piggyback dosnt trick temperature just to increase fuel like some did in the early days. There a lot more advance now. Your incorrect about the different timing as a chip only effects fuel and air. Compared to a ecu tune that can effect all 3. That's why a chip has less improvement. It really comes down to the computing power. As long as it's 64 bit there should be no dramas on a modern vehicle. The computer is nearly as big as the original ecu.

Still liking the tune. I havnt changed suspension or wheels so it can be a little overpowering. The extra power from an apr tune would be a waste without some other tweaks but still an option.

Every ones going to have there own opinion. I've tuned a lot of Subarus with tatrix cables that replace the tune or Cobb intercept boxes. It's all about how it's done. Most of these tunes are still on the conservative side.

                          • So I called in there today - not what I was expecting!! A prefab building on blocks behind Mazda with some signage on a chain wire fence (apparantly they have a workshop with a dyno too)
Inside was full of new & used parts for all sorts of euro cars - spoke to the tuner guy who is going to get back to me with options on down pipes & intakes etc
They have a few tuning options but have a special on revo this month $1124 with a dyno run - normally $1495 + 395 dyno
stage 2 tune is an additional $395 much like APR (but they offer a free tune if you fit their down pipe - well over 2k)

Euro Tune on the Gold Coast APR Stage one $1795.00, Stage two $395.00

V A Garage on the Gold Coast offered Blue fin @ $1250 + $120 upgrade to stage 2

Yet to call in & see VA Garage in Cleveland - another member here rated them highly & they seem pretty well priced
Also want to check Bayside Performance as they do a heap of vag cars & possibly Harding Performance in Coorparoo (they just did a car in Motor Mag Tuner shoot out)

Looks like I will need to investigate the air box further as most of the stage tunes even in stage one will max out the flow rate of 300bhp

                              The prices are below:

The information about the tune is included in this link:

                              • They also recommend a DSG map upgrade, the guys at VA Motors offered this

                                Your tuning options are:
                                ECU Stage 1+: AUD1249.00
Combo stage 1 inc DSG Stage 1 tune: AUD1799.00

                                ECU Stage 2: AUD1399
Combo stage 2 inc DSG Stage 2 tune: AUD1949
The above prices include the Uniconnect+ flash cable/system

                                The hardware:
I can offer you the Unitronic downpipe however due to the cost of shipping and customs it takes quite a while and is around the AUD1500 mark. Alternatively we can get you a custom made one from Australia. Specs: 3" diameter, T304 stainless steel, 200cell magnaflow cat converter. This would be AUD899.00
Unitronic carbon air intake kit AUD750

I'm hoping to catch up with Ilidchen at some stage as he has had the airbox & stage one done from them
