Open up the factory intake on the passenger side with a drill/hacksaw blade/sandpaper or a dremel (this section is blanked-off from standard)

Buy a blanking plate which covers the big gap on the driver's side of the factory intake:

    5Q0129849 - Air Intake Blocking Plate - VW Golf MK7 GTI/R & Audi S3/TT/TTS– VAGPARTS Australia

Add a turbo inlet elbow - around $200 for a name brand e.g.

    034 - Turbo Inlet Elbow - Volkswagen Golf MK7 GTI/R & Audi 8V S3/TT/TTS– VAGPARTS Australia

or $40 for an Aliexpress special (I run one of these) New Turbo High Flow Inlet Pipe For Golf MK7 GTI Adui S3 A3 Leon MK3 EA888 Tube Performance turbocharger Intake Hose (aliexpress.com)

Some advocate adding an aftermarket panel filter, but recent testing has shown how close in flow the factory filter actually is to aftermarket panels. Personally, I stick with stock given that they filter much better than aftermarket items. Plenty of good reading on this website Panel Air Filter Flow Test | My Golf Mk7 GTI (very interesting to see how the large surface area of the factory filter means that flow does not drop off even when dirty!)
More Modified Stock Airbox Testing | My Golf Mk7 GTI

You can replace the factory 'accordian' hose between the airbox and turbo inlet with a silicon version if you like - around $150-200 for a name brand item. The difference in flow is minimal though.

Essentially, you can do this on the very cheap (circa $100 retaining the OEM filter) or use name-brand bits.

Surely this cannot be right. I have never had an issue with things I have purchased from AE, but have never gotten any vehicle parts from there.
I seem to be having issues with aliexpress links. However, there are a couple of matt/satin black painted turbo inlet elbows on aliexpress which are a good part and perform well. Where do you think the parts are manufactured and sourced from in the first place? Hint - it's not the USA, Europe or Australia

aliexpress also sells a lot of OEM VWAG parts which are supplied for the Chinese VW market. If you can confirm compatibility and shop smartly, you're golden.

There's really bugger-all between the two - maybe a handful of hrspwrs which the best calibrated bum dyno will never feel, although it might make a squiggly line on a dyno graph appear a tad higher.

Those gains are not insignificant. To me though, given the cost, that would be part of a stage 2 upgrade, where you have used stage 1 for immediate larger gains, and are then chipping away at further components after that to incrementally increase.

Just my thoughts due to being a bit tight.

I have the R600 in my wife's T-Roc R where I like the performance and she likes the quietness of it. Used to have it on my Golf R, but chased more noise (and sacrificed a few kws) and now have an IE open intake on the Golf.

On the toy runaround GTI, the budget dictated a mishmash of parts making up the intake, Ramair TIP, CTS elbow, and a K&N pod (Cost less than $200). Sounds awesome, but probably has very little performance effect.

For a cheap and reasonable performing tune, I'd suggest you look at Ecotune ($900 for Stg 1 or Stg 2), 999Automotive in Archerfield is the dealer for that. Going there for the Stg 2 tune on the GTI soon.

Appreciate the heads up on ecotune. The website didnt list my vehicle as an option, but still worth a call when I am ready to make the leap in a couple months.

For the time being I have ordered the parts to mod the stock intake, including the blanking plate.

                    See how I go.

I remember seeing dyno graphs and figures on the Harding Performance website where the R600 made about 5kW over 5,500rpm and 15kW or so above 6,500 rpm over the original unmodified stock intake. That 6,500rpm+ peak figure sounds great, but the dyno chart tells the full story there, with minimal gains anywhere else across the curve. They also noted that the extra power was the result of the turbo producing an extra 1psi up top.

I'd be very interested to see an independent back-to-back dyno session comparing the R600 to a modified factory intake to see exactly where they stand.

Somebody posted a link above which included the R600 VS a bunch of other intakes including a modified stock box :

I personally have a modified stock box (similar to guile) coupled with a stage 1 tune and bang for buck it's hard to beat (test resukts courtesy of mymk7.com testing)

I saw that chart myself and was impressed. The blanking plate literally just arrived as I was reading your reply.

Now just waiting on the rest of the bits from AE and keep putting pennies aside for my tune.

                          Appreciate the input.

All parts arrived and fitted. Most things seemed pretty good. The clips for the breather hose don't quite lock in to the elbow though which I am hoping isn't going to be an issue (or I can hopefully rectify it with a hose clamp).

It shouldn't be an issue - mine doesn't fit all that snugly, but doesn't come loose at all.

I've often contemplated fitting a small black cable tie to fully prevent it from ever coming loose, but haven't felt the need to do it.
