Was notified that my S3 will be landing in Melbourne on the 19th of November, and then not long after that on transportation headed to SA.

Was metallic paint, performance pack and sunroof.

It is onboard the porgy.

Was build week 39, looking at week 47 arrival to aus. 8 weeks from build to landing if that gives others who are waiting a rough estimate.

Mine was build week 42 I think and have been told it's arriving January.

Yeh it is generally 10 weeks, once you have a VIN you can track ship and arrival time at Australian dock, then roughly 2 weeks for compliance and to arrive at dealer. I guess around Christmas and New Year there may be delays but your dealer can track it once it is in the country.

All worth the wait, make sure you post pics once it arrives!

I have a screen shot of the original order but the vin # in that field looks too short. "000531794"

It doesn't come up thru that site.

That number is a placeholder they put in the VIN field before the car's built. Once it has been, the real VIN (unrelated to that number) will be available. Just send your dealer a message explicitly asking for it; it'll only take him a sec to check and you'll be able to track it straight away.

The most like-for-like you can get an R and an S3 is by speccing leather and DSG on the R, and Magnetic Ride on the S3 Sportback. The prices are then within $5k or so (going from memory here). The VW Vienna leather is over $3000... ...I actually would have been happy with an R if I could spec it the way I wanted from factory (Nappa leather, 8" Discover Pro head unit and MDI, Dynaudio upgrade, Pretoria 19s - all options available in Europe), and stay with the VW brand. But Volkswagen Australia isn't interested...the S3 was a very easy decision for me in the end.

Am at the same cross roads Adam. Love the shape and size of the Golf R, but cannot believe how low tech the current discovery gps head unit is. It's a step back from my current RNS510. I am test driving the S3 this weekend, and already on paper thinking S3. But my calculations say there is a $10k price difference.

There's only a $10k price difference if you don't add any options to the R. If its base spec manual suits you (and you're not going to subsequently spend a ton of cash upgrading the headunit, retrofitting anything else that should have been available, etc), then the R does certainly represent great buying. It's also much louder and a bit more aggressive than the S3 as well.

Conversely, if you'd likely have ticked a few options anyway, and/or prefer a more refined and subtle performance package, then the S3 makes so much sense - even financially. As per my post you quoted, in some configurations the price difference is (relatively) minor, and yet the S3 is equipped comprehensively better.

Nope, been hardly driving enough to keep my battery charged so probably not worth it at this stage.

Got a motorbike a year ago for commuting to Melbourne. Quicker, cheaper, funner.
I'm now torn between upgrading the bike or the car later this year.
