Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • VIC Back on the scene, this time in Melbourne

Since I sold my old 1980 GTi a few years ago back in the UK I've been itching to get back into the VW world and only a mk1 was going to do.

    Here is the old one that I regret selling;

The good news is that I have managed to buy a new project in Hobart (a 1977 GLS) and am organising the shipping over to Melbourne at the moment so that I can get cracking.

Plenty of ideas at this stage and I know that I'll be seeking advice and thoughts over the coming months and beyond.

    Good to be back.

Thought it looked familiar. There's a discussion here about the car suggesting it's parts from 2 cars welded together but no-one could confirm - http://www.vwwatercooled.com/forums/...as-101568.html

You should have a close look underneath to check.

    Keep us posted.

    Cheers

I popped over to Hobart and took a good look around the car - inside and out, up and down - and there was nothing to suggest that it was a cut and shut.

Other than the passenger footwell needing replacing the bodywork was solid, rust-free and straight.

I'm not too fussed about the swallowtail panel on a later car and will aim to get the bodywork back to being completely stock and original anyway. Inside will be ripped out, as will the engine.

It was a decent base of a car from what I saw but really appreciate the heads-up and potential warning! Not that the cut and shut suggestion in the thread was hugely helpful, I would love to know what evidence was seen to come to this conclusion on inspection.

      Cheers,

      Huxley

The only person who said it was a cut-and-shut was Stanton and he has a reputation for being very negative. It doesn't surprise me that the Golf isn't as bad as he made out.

What are your plans for it?

Let me know if you need anything. My local wrecker has a few parts but he knows what they are worth too.

He recently sold 20 MK1's to Egypt so he's down to only 40.

I was steered away from this car from someone that knew this car, apparently it was a cut and shut and it was done about twenty years ago...I'm really sorry to be the negative one here I don't actually have any evidence as I never went to look at the car after being told about it...I Really hope to be wrong but a 2 door mk1 does not stay for sale at that price for that long.
