Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    Hi, Im Backo

As soon as I make room in the shed, my Brother-in-law and I will soon be building a Mk1 2 door Golf into a hillclimb/sprint car. B-I-L is a panel beater/spray painter, I am a mechanic. I think between us it should turn out alright.

Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas for us to follow? I am new to euro cars, although the B-I-L has had a couple of golfs before

    Ideas? Where do I start???

Start a thread and post some pictures on the MK1 pages so everyone can tell you what they think you should do. Anything from mild (1.8 8v with webbers) to wild (20v turbo with mega horsepower) depending on your budget. There's a 1100 hp MK1 in Germany so that's probably your upper limit but you have a few options for getting 200hp which isn't bad in a 700kg car.

Suspension wise go the normal route - polybushes everywhere, coilovers, big sway bar on the back, good tyres on 15" rims.

Have a look at my build thread, my car is built for a bit of track work but still an everyday driver. You'll be surprised how quick these little cars are through corners, even in road trim.

      Thanks Paul. Nice thread mate.

After being stuffed around for weeks with car trailers, we head over this afternoon to pick the old girl up. Pics to follow later.

On another note, where should i be looking for an 8v crossflow head in NSW?
