Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • VW Passat Service

    Hey guys,

Just had a 150k service on my 2008 Passat R36, and they mentioned a few issues they'd identified. I just paid for the service, and decided to touch base here first to get some advice on the fixes they recommended first. Naturally, I want your advice on if it is something I should get done with VW themselves, or buy the parts online cheaper and have a local mechanic do the work. If you can suggest any parts, where to buy them and even pricing on the below, i'd be appreciative!

    1. FOUND SLIGHT OIL LEK FROM FILTER HOUSING, WILL REQUIRE NEW FILTER HOUSING - PARTS AND LABOUR $511.00

    2. INSPECT SUSPENSION-RATTLE FROM O/S/F AERA OF VEHICLE WHEN GOING OVER BUMPSCARRIED OUT INSPECTION OF VEHICLE
FOUND O/S/F AND N/S/F ANTI ROLL BAR LINKAGES WORN AND WILL REQUIRE REPLACEMNT - PARTS AND LABOUR $332.00

    3. FOUND O/S/R SHOCK STARTING TO LEAK OIL AND WILL REQUIRE REPLACMENT

    4. RECOMEND REPLACING BOTH REAR SHOCKS - PARTS AND LABOUR $876.00

    5.
FOUND REAR BRAKES HAVE APPROX 5000km REAMNINGWILL REQUIRE NEW BRAKE PADS AND DISCS PARTS AND LABOUR $617.00

Any advice you can provide will be much appreciated.

    Thanks!

I won't go and second-guess another workshop's opinion or their pricing structure, but with the rear brakes, you'd want to at least get a European specialist to do them as the Electronic Park Brake needs to be manipulated with the diagnostic computer to replace the pads.

Any advice on brands, approx pricing (e.g. is the above just a rip-off or is it competitive), and any recommended people to do the work in Sydney area (Northern Beaches).
