  • Hi from Canberra

Hi everyone. I service my dad's 2011 B7 Passat (1.8 TSI CDAA) which so far has included oil changes, new front brake pads + discs, new oil seals for the vacuum pump, getting the rear camera working, and replacing the water pump. I also fitted a Brink towbar for him.

Last year I saved the engine by de-carbonising the piston rings by soaking them with Berryman B-12 (toluene). The engine was using 1mL of oil per km, and the VW certified mechanic dad knows had said the engine needed to be replaced. After seeing the Berryman technique on Youtube I thought we had nothing to lose by trying it. Two days of soaking got rid of the sludge.

Hi and welcome. Nice to see another new member on here and someone who is not shy of a bit of DIY.

Funny you mention the Berrymans B12 chemical, as I just bought 2x cans of it myself to use in my nieces car (Mazda SP23) that I service and maintain for her as its starting to consume a bit of oil inbetween oil changes now that its gone past 200,000km. Hoping the Berrymans piston soak will free up those piston rings.

Good luck with the soaking! I had my heart in my mouth while we drive the first few hundred kilometers to see if it worked.

Am now trying to code for the footwell lights that I fitted yesterday. The "Footwell Lights" app in OBDeleven hasn't added that option to the MFD menu. I think I also need to activate "Footwell lights with Terminal 58d active", which as far as I can see requires a Pro account, but I'm a bit reluctant to pay $200 or so for a one-off that mightn't work. I thought the app would have done that part too.

I cant help you with the wiring and coding question, but we do have a couple of wiring and coding guru's on here who can no doubt offer some help. But yes unfortunately with OBDeleven you can't do a heck of a lot without the account.

There's a member here in CBR who's offered to give coding help, so I've sent them a DM
