Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • GTI from South West Sydney

    Hi gang,

How are we all? Good i hope.

I recently purchased a mk6 Golf GTI in tornado red. I never intended to but i couldn't let it slide away at the price i negotiated it down to.

I come from a background of turbo charged JDM's and Australian V8's. It's the first time i've owned a euro hot hatch and i'll be honest, it's a love hate relationship. So to increase the love and reduce the hate, i'm starting a project/build which i've named project GET-84K! Not sure if this forum has a section for posting up builds/logs but if there is one, i'll post my build there. Feel free to follow my build and share your thought's and opinion's on it.

That's it for now from me!

Hi and welcome. How much did you pay for the Mk6 GTI? Im possibly buying one myself to flip it. Its the very last of the Mk6 GTI (2013 model, light grey (United grey - rare for the GTI), in decent condition with full service history but it has done 195,000km).

Bit tricky this, as often you need to spend too much to get it in a saleable condition and this eats into any profits. I've been there a few times now ... does not stop me from doing it again, though.

i paid $7k for a 2010 mk6s mods like a Cobb AP, xforce varex cat back and more. it does have 196k kms though and the engine light is on (i think from the Cobb Ap or one of the other mods). paint is good but it does have about 5 noticeable rock chips on the bonnet. Also, I don't know if it's a VW thing but F@ck me is the quality of the electrics rubbish? My dash has random warning lights flash whenever they feel like it. For example, the ABS, traction control and some other light, lights up on the dash when i turn the car on. i turn the car off and back on and the lights go away WTF?!

Invest in a good diagnostic tool.

Its normal for certain lights to come on for a few seconds when you start the car (eg like airbag/abs etc) as the car does a check to make sure those systems are working. But if they are coming on randomly while you are driving then there is something wrong.

Wheel speed sensors are a very common failure on the Mk5 and Mk6 Golfs and these will cause the ABS and traction control lights to come on. Thankfully they are relatively cheap, at about $40-45 each for a good quality replacement - but you may as well change all 4 of them (one on each wheel hub).

And as mentioned, you might want to think about a decent diagnostic tool, personally I use Carista, but OBDEleven is more popular amongst the VW community. But either tool is fantastic and will save you plenty of money in the long run. OBDEleven is a more powerful tool, but you need to weigh up if you will use any of those features to justify the cost.

Carista is $65 to buy the dongle then approx $80 per year for full access to all features via the app: Carista OBD2 Diagnostic Scanner – Android and iOS | AutoInstruct

OBDEleven is $320 and that includes a 12 month subscription to use all features: OBDeleven V2 Ultimate Pack '-' VAG Diagnostics | AutoInstruct
