  • QLD Just bought a 2012 Polo 6R GTI, my first VW, and falling totally in love with it!

A first time VW owner living on the Gold Coast here. A month ago my neighbour managed to write-off my last car while endeavoring to park hers! But every cloud has its silver lining, mine being finding my now new to me white 2012 Polo 6R GTI. After a thorough going over and fitting new front rotors + pads, it seems to be in very good order. The only potential issue I'm having is a delay in reaction to throttle pedal input when moving off from a standstill once the engine has warmed up. Nothing, nothing then a boy-racer take-off as everything madly catches-up, throttle input now being more than intended when your left momentarily motionless while the rest of the traffic is moving off! I'm thinking in may be the Throttle pedal position sensor? I'd be very grateful of any advice. Thank you.

    Hi and welcome.

The throttle delay is common on the modern VW’s. If you don’t like it (i don’t either) then it can be greatly improved with a throttle controller.

Plenty of options for throttle controllers but I installed ones of these in a Pajero and a Skoda recently and it made a big difference.

The delay is common (actually always there) in DSG equipped VWs. It can be downright dangerous in some circumstances. Driving in Sport mode will alleviate a bit too.

The only real fix is to have the TCU (Transmission Control Unit) tuned. It not only removes (most of) the lag, but also extends the life of the clutches by allowing less slip and more pressure.

On that, GTI (the 1.4 TSC engine), I'd also recommend an ECU tune, as this seems to extend the life of the engine (and as a bonus it makes more power )
