Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Mk6 GTi dsg money pit…

Hi all. Mk6 GTi DSG. 147km. Whining in 1st and 2nd which has been going on for about 1000km so I’ve driven it very gently. Took it to lube mobile, who removed the box and took it to transmissions r us in Perth, and apparently needs bearings replaced and a new clutch. Quoted $6000 all up. $1200 for removal / install by lube mobile and $4800 for clutch and 8 x bearings replacement at trans r us.

I’ll keep it simple, am I being ripped off? Can I put in a used box with clutch for less than $6000 or is that not possible?

I don’t have time to do the research myself. Hoping some legends on here can help me out.

    Thanks in advance.

First why Lubemobile and not a Euro specialist?

A new clutch pack is a grand of the $4800 rebuild cost. Bearings arent pricey but there's plenty of work to get to them and replace.

The quote for the whole thing isnt out of this world IMO but I cant see a secondhand box costing 6k fitted. However, you would have a good warranty from the DSG rebuild I would imagine.

      Thanks for the response.

Lube mobile because I’m not overly precious about the car and they’ve always been good.

I do use euro specialists for my other car….and tbh I’ve had some poor service from a few Euro specialists in Perth anyway…

I’ll dig around for a used box and see what the go is.

Not suitable for the GTI because its from an Audi S3 which is all wheel drive. But as an indication of what price you would be looking at for a 2nd hand replacement DSG transmission: Audi S3 8P TTS 8J 6 Speed DQ250 Automatic Transmission DSG Gearbox 02E

Same place also has a DQ250 but its out of a Mk7 diesel wagon, so no doubt the diesels have different gear ratios to a petrol model VW Golf MK7 6 Speed DSG Auto Automatic Dual Clutch Transmission Gearbox PPM | eBay
