Oil Loss

Hi All
had my 2014 1,4 golf tsi for about 6 monthe (135000 Ks)and dissapointed its lost about a Ltr of oil in that time theres NO leak and its definately not burning oill so checked the PCV valve ( its the small round one on top of the engine block not the big plastic one ) hosepipe and its bone dry so where the hell is this oil going ? have to say its very dissapointing as its got a FSH and never missed a beat I was thinking of getting a new one but this has made me think again
any advice is much appreciated

They use a bit of oil and a sensible owner checks it once a month at least

was the car serviced in that time or before purchase

A few factors to consider

VW will not consider oil consumption a problem until it is more than 1litre per 2000km, engines are designed to use some oil and how much is difficult to quantify. Some engines use very little some use more
If a lot of water or other volativles build up in the oil due to city driving the level can drop if you then do longer country trips and run at higher tmperatures for longer preiods boiling off the water and volatiles

It was serviced by VW in January (as per log book) and 4000Ks later its lost about a Ltr its still dissapointing that they do use oil bought the wife a Hyudai I20 brand new its now done 110 Ks and never lost a drop of anything and it cost a fraction of a Golf no if thats "normal"then I think I'll put my dollars somewhere else shame as I reallyi love the car it drives superb but Im finding it hard to justify checking oil so often surely they dont use that much so often ?

What makes you sure of this?

I took it to my ususal mechanic he s been looking after me for over 20 years believe me hés german and knows these engines very well having said that he did say they do use more oil than most vehicles ? still seems a bit excessive though ?

The 1.4 TSI is well known to burn some oil so I think you will find this is where your oil is disappearing. You wont see blue smoke out of the exhaust but it still is burning a small amount of oil. As others have mentioned, this is quite common in modern engines (especially turbocharged engines) so suggest you buy a bottle of oil to have in the garage (or keep a small bottle in the boot of the car) for top ups every few thousand kilometres.

You can also try a slightly thicker oil (5w-40) which will help slow down the oil consumption somewhat. Just make sure you buy a good quality synthetic oil with the VW approval. Penrite make a 5w-40 oil with the VW approval. Penrite Enviro+ Engine Oil - 5W-40 1 Litre | Supercheap Auto

Thanks for the input guys but as its actually the wifes car think I'll play safe and go for a new Toyota or even another Hyundai as said a shame but Ive never owned a car that was prone to losing so much oil is it the case with a newer model ?
