Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Hi, my name is Michael and have a 2007 Jetta which My wife loves but starting to think about doing some servicing myself since dealers charging lots. I live in Wheelers Hill vic and looking to read more interesting articles here. Regards, Michael

Hi, I live down the road literally. I usually send my car to a VW specialist mechanic when car is out of warranty. So much cheaper. Everyone will have their favorite mech. For me, I use VW Park in Nunnawading.

      Welcome!

Dealers often get a bad wrap (and usually come at a decent premium to boot), but some can be pretty good. They also tend to go down the path of new OEM replacement parts for anything with any sort of issue as a first option, which is nice and all, but costs can quickly add up when that's the case. I find that specialists tend to do a little more troubleshooting before recommending replacing anything... but like I said, some dealers (and specialists) are better than others in that regard.

I'm using Volkwerke in Doncaster for our cars which isn't too far away. It also allows good access to the 907 bus (which stops virtually out the front) to the CBD for work making things nice and simple. They have always been very good to our vehicles.

On a 14-15 year old car you should certainly consider doing basic maintenance yourself if you have the tools and know-how as it will save you a heap of cash and very much doubt it will have any impact on the value of the car (should you choose to sell it) considering the cars age. Just keep receipts for oils etc and take photos as evidence of the work you have done.

Both my cars are still quite new (2015 models) so I still get them serviced by a VW/Audi specialist mechanic every 12 months, but I like to do an interim oil change and check over 6 months after, as 12 months is a long time between servicing and if there are any issues I want to be proactive and fix/replace before they potentially become a bigger issue.

Get you oils when Supercheap/Repco have specials on (eg SuperCheap currently have a members special on Penrite oils) and get oil/air/fuel filters etc from Run Auto Parts.
