  • Hi all - In the market for a Golf

    Hi all you watercooled people!

My current rides are an '89 aircooled Porsche 911 and 2 boring but ultra reliable and practical Toyotas (Yaris and 7 st Kluger)

I am looking for a more interesting car than the Toyota Yaris for my wife and kids to drive - we want a manual for the kids to learn in.

We both like Golfs: I had an 8v Mk 2 GTi which I loved and my wife had a Mk 3 2 litre GTi which she loved.

Our budget is $8-9k so I had settled on the 118Kw Comfortline as a good mix of performance and economy, but have come across a number of horror stories with the 118Kw engine online.

As reliability and cost to maintain and to run are major factors for me, which models would you good people recommend? Interested to hear your thoughts.

    Cheers

    Welcome to the forum.

Sorry but I'm a MK2 lover (mine is my daily, doing over 1000 ks a week) so that's what I'd recommend. Reliable, fun to drive and increasing in value.

    You know you want to.

Hmm, not quite what the wife has in mind. But agree the Mk2 is great
