Massive thanks to Clay for the opportunity in the first place. I still think there will always be a place for happy laps but want to get some official times now!

I would prefer Lakeside to QR, I think it has more to offer for the Polo.
I would like Lakeside more but and then QR is alot safer in distance to the wall. I guess for whoever is interested having some little more full on session. We could organise to go to the practice session in Lakeside or QR. All you need is PPE gear. But the problem is most of these practice session are on weekdays.

    • I believe Lakeside sprints can offer a segment (since sprints is broken up into classes) where if you have enough people (i think it is 15 or so) they can let you run in your own class (VW Watercooled etc)

I will have to check with them what this involves and the cost as well as if we could do a timed laps session some other way.

Bear in mind, Happy laps requires no safety gear so in reality we probably shouldn't be going as fast as we push it towards the end.
As James said, the excel cup are doing slower times to our happy laps but they have a full roll cage and race suit, extinguisher and helmet.

I will give them a call when they open to find out what options are available.
Having said that, i believe safety gear would be required and a minimum number of people which could be a hurdle since a most people don't want to do anything requiring PPE.

          • Personally, I like the Happy Laps format. PPE aside, I just don't want to push my car any harder than I am already. It is great to be able to push the car beyond what you could do legally on the street, without risking hitting the cars limits. I want to be able to experience what the car was designed to do, without taking it too far.

I'll stick with Happy Laps, for now, thanks. And go-karting for a 'racing' fix...

            • That's fine Rob.
Happy Laps still has a place for a lot of people as it's a fun/cheap way to get a bit of a thrill and see what your car can do with fewer limitations.

I would be looking at the more advanced lapping as an additional event on top of happy laps so everyone has an event that caters for their desires.

                • As for PPE in the sprints, requires a helmet (open face or full face), long sleeves, jeans and closed in shoes. Open face helmets can be had new from motorbike shops for $80. These events also require a QR license, AASA I think it's called. It is not a CAMS license as it's not head to head racing. The AASA license allows for track sessions at Lakeside and QR. It used to be about $50 per annum.

Steve, I might join you at that shootout. Will see if I can get new brake pads in.

Absolutely! It will be great to have complementary events, for those who want it. My car is my daily driver, so I need to be careful with it.

I am not yet convinced it is as robust as some of VWs other products, given the potential issues with this dry-clutch DSG, and the known oil consumption issue.

                    • So it turns out as part of the TopGear series you can have your own segment which requires 18 cars to attend.

Invited Groups Are groups that have bought their own slots or people that want to have their own group of at least 18 cars. Invited groups must be scheduled into the program at least six weeks before the event date. We can usually take a few extra cars if we are notified on the Saturday before the event during the Top Gear Sprint or General Practice sessions. Sorry but Sunday morning entries are too disruptive.
But the cost is getting up there at $195 plus the $60 day licence and i would have to confirm safety requirements.

                        • $195 sound good to me
I got my yearly license with both track. And for the same amount of money, it will last longer on the track then me spending it in the bar at a Friday night
I am in if anyone want to organise, i woll leave my car in Brisbane home and fly back when there is a event.

                            • newbies should be aware that these timed sessions are high risk, but on the other hand less number of cars = more flexibility to go at your own pace without causing "traffic".

doing an advanced driving course such as the vw driving experience at evolution level is highly recommended before doing sprint or track day events.

qr actually does an advanced course for $99 per head with min of 5 participants, could be something we should arrange for some ppl who want to learn new or refresh their techniques.
