Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • The little Mk3 did pretty well out there considering the lack of power.

I found out how to do turn 2 on about the second last lap so i'll know for next time.
Also, front passenger tyre is getting a bit close to the wear markers where as the drivers one has a bit more rubber.

Having a bigger/heavier car doesn't help too much either as it's harder to get up to speed and then harder to slow down again.
Next time i might see if i can push it to the 200m marker for Turn 3 before i back off.
Will probably end up with new tyres by then too.

    • I went about 190ish down the back, but I wasn't pedalling it too hard into T3 so left myself a lot of braking distance. With almost bald front tyres, and brakes that are due for replacement - that kitty litter is pretty deep! I agree with what some others have said, Lakeside is a bit more challenging, but for amateurs QR is perhaps more fun as it gives you plenty of space and plenty of safe run-off area for those who want to get in and have a bit of a go. All round great morning! Heaps of fun.

Now for a service and new front tyres this week...

      • Thanks to Aaron for a great morning. Always a good thing to experience totally different driving conditions to what we're generally used to. Agree with a few of you about LS being more entertaining but learned a lot more about the Devil at QR. Didn't really see any of the off road action, but loved seeing a few sets of brakes smoking like a Bob Marley concert at the end

The Devil held up well and was more challenging this time having the front end braced up harder with the new Wiechers combo and the back stripped out which resulted in some rear sliding fun in turns 3 and 6. My rear tyres are almost shot after the last outing at LS and it showed by the end of the session so I came in a bit early.

Was impressed with the straight line speed of a few cars, Bens R obviously , the fake R32 1.9 TDI which was boosted to all hell and the silver S3. I think there was another white R that was quick too. Cars that disappointed were the Benz and the white EVO but think the drivers may have been taking it a little easy. Cars I want to see but never did are the bonkers Tiggy of Clay and the Fiat 500. Next time then!

Trying to post some footage soon.

        Cheers!

        • There was a boosted r32? how did I not even notice this.

If anyone got any sideline footage/photos I'd love to see them for something a bit different to all the incar footage, although the incar stuff is nice too, thanks guys

          • I was surprised by the Evo and the Merc as well.
Apparently by the end the Merc was giving it the beans for most of the laps but at the start when i was behind him he was very cautious (with due cause, they are very tail happy and the dirt was everywhere)

Only saw 1 polo the whole time (the blue one)

To be honest i was surpised by the Blue R32 look-alike.
Would never have guessed it was a 1.9TDI

            • I wonder if there's any chance of getting timed laps? Keep the same format, though also have some timing. I guess that's essential sprints, they're just so overpriced compared to this event.

Anthony, does your G-tech have lap times? Or is there a good phone app? My head unit has most features, but no lap timee

              • lol sorry it was a R32 and boosted, he just puts a 1.9 TDi badge on it to avoid attention.

Sure does Sean, just need a sd card attachment!

                • first of all, thanks Aaron for organising.

personally i like QR more than Lakeside as i can push a bit harder, feel safer and it's much easier to deal with traffic (whether passing or being passed).

T3 is definitely a PITA. the dirt at apex didn't help. my car held up fine brake wise and i allowed it to cool down every few laps and i let off the throttle early into T3. my biggest problem was actually windscreen fogging up straight after getting on the track. was pretty scary driving blind into T3 for the first time. would definitely love to come back in the future.

lastly, GSL Rallysport is good. they are now based in Acacia Ridge.

                  • Hey Everyone,

Seemed like you all had an enjoyable time, unfortunately I didnt read the last posts on the forum, in which the track time was moved forward from 8:30 -> 7:30, so I wasnt able to get any photos of the action.

However I was able to get some photos from the meet afterwards, I hope to cover future events.

An article has been writtten on DownshiftAUS.

So you got the RR version? SS doesn't appear to have lap timer.

                        What car were you in?

I have been trying and trying to get downshift to come out to our events since June last year when we had hte euro meets out at Northshore park.

I now have inspiration to wash the Tig before these events haha.

Hope to se you at Lakeside Raceway in June?

                        • Ok guys, well yes my dad did get some fantastic sideline shots and some videos too. If I can remember to do it, I'll upload them tonight after 7pm as I have a uni exam from 5pm-6:30pm.

I hit just ~163km/h (somewhere between 160 and 165 on the dial anyway) on the back straight but I braked early just before the 200m mark to avoid brake fade which I did successfully. I didn't notice any brake fade at all except for when I was driving home it was a little noticeable. I only hit 155km/h on the early laps and I was stoked to see it go over this because I didn't get past the 155km/h barrier at lakeside. My car really runs out of breath once I change into fourth at ~145km/h. IMO it's not bad for a little 1.6 N/A i4. (i think its about 88 or 90kw or something like that).

Very impressed by the mk3 golf though. IMO its better to have a slower car because you have an excuse if someone overtakes you haha.

Also would it be worth upgrading to ebc greenstuff pads on my DS3? Or should I wait until the factory ones wear out? I can get them pretty cheap from the UK so pricing is alright, but I'll hit up GSL about it.

I see Dad's Range Rover made it into one of the shots from EvoBlitz. haha.
