Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

All I do is drag and drop my AVCHD (.MTS file, although it may be different for you - it's the video file from the storage card), into Windows Live Movie Maker. Press youtube at the top, sign in and it will convert, upload and publish it all for you. Just be warned though that some very minor editing may be needed as Youtube only allows 15min per video.

      • I use xilisoft to cut the file into 2 parts.
I then use pazera free mov to avi to alter the file type to avi so i can upload it to youtube easier, also scale it down to 60%

No worries, thanks for participating - good to hear everyone enjoyed themselves.

Oh, forgot to mention Don said that everyone was well behaved & we all came straight off the track when showed the red flag at the end (which is unusual) - so well done!

          Hopefully nothing too major.
Thanks for joining in - hope the repairs aren't too serious!

Should have seen it coming really, 1.6 i4 vs. 3.2 V6. hmm wonder who will win lol. I must admit Part 2 is a little boring as I slowed the pace back a little bit to rest the car.
Thanks for the vids Rhys and Clay - very entertaining watching the pug, and the civic near the end of part1! (Rhys - I agree with Clay - your lines are getting good!)

I also had a couple of ducks try a kamikaze manoeuvre on me @ turn 2 at one stage!

The vr6 brakes with greenstuff pads lasted the whole time without fading much if at all, but then again I had the least powerful car out there which really showed on this course thanks to all the straights.

Look forward to the next one
Good to have you along mate - I thought you did really well in the Mk3.
I wasn't quite used to the coil-overs installed the day before and had a bit if lift off oversteer to contend with as well - certainly makes you take notice at the corners!
I was looking into aftermarket pads - does anyone have any experience with pads for vag's other than the Greenstuff ones that Ben mentioned? I remember someone at the last Happy Laps talking about Endless pads being good and not much dust?!

            Thanks

BTW I noticed a couple of people commenting after the happy laps about my hazards flashing at the end of the back straight at turn 3. The hazards annoys me so much >=( Anyway its some sort of safety feature when the car detects its about to crash or something like that haha.

Here is a video showing the hazards, looks like even Tiff Needell is annoyed by them. Skip to 0:30

                • Thanks Aaron for organising everything, myself and the old man had a great day. Now just to remind him I dont like people revving my car to 7500 lmao. As for offs I swear I must have been the car behind each moment and I didnt have a camera to record any of them, but boy did that Honda go in way too fast in the cnr lol

                  • Aaron, thanks again for organising.
I witnessed 2 new things yesterday like many others: the snow sign on the dash and oversteer!! And that was with ESP on at that point (T4, 1st lap...).

Whilst Lakeside is by far a more interesting course, I think I actually had more fun at QR. More room for everyone, the track marhsalls were totally relaxed and the bacon was really thick (the last bit's a joke of course).

Rhys did your old man get some photos? Did anyone else? There was a guy from Downshift there at the end taking some photos of the car in the carpark. Sadly he got there just after the happy laps finished otherwise some of us could have been famous.

Did anyone else keep an eye out for their speed down the back straight? I cracked 200 pretty easily, but to be honest I was thinking it would have been more (i've only ever driven the clubman circuit there and just assumed the national track's back straight was bigger than it was). Mind you, watching some in-car footage of the V8s on youtube it seems they only hit 250, so i guess 200ish isn't bad on stock tyres etc. They leave turn 2 at 160km/h+ too which helps!

Oh, and way to go Webber!!

Might see some of you at Norwell next Saturday arvo?

Yup, I second greg at GSL. I'm running the street pads, Remsa's I think they are (whatever it says in my signature), I've found them to be fine for our events and well priced. The track pads were like twice the price. I also like having the slotted rotors.

If you can get Formula Ferodo DS2500's, they are also a very good pad, a bit more track oriented than the remsa's, meaning they lack a little feel when cold.

                      • I saw a little over 170 on the digital speed on the back straight but that was as far as i wanted to push it for my first outing, could probably see 180 if i wanted to go a bit harder and brake later.

I do agree that LAkeside is more interesting but QR is more relaxed due to the wider track and more run off areas.

Didn't actually see the Type R incident but apparently it was full of understeery goodness.

Turn 4 caught a lot of people out.
Turn 2 was a bit hairy for me a couple of times, hitting the bumps whilst on the throttle led to the back end hopping up and out a bit.

                        • Thanks for Organizing Aaron. It was good to do a different track. Its a lot harsher on brakes than lakeside. We also seem to have a little more freedom with speed which was good.
This was my first test with the GTX3071 turbo. Initially had overboost problems where the boost controller would shut down and then not allow me to make boost. Hence some of you would have seen me pulled over.....several times. After turning down the boost i then had issues with the DV leaking (flat spots on gear changes and holding boost). Which will be upgraded this week, i blocked it off last night to see if it was the issue and as i thought it was. Car run perfect with it blocked off (no one try this with your K03,K04)
Glad i put DS2500 pads on the car friday. That with the braided lines and motul fluid works well. Someone mentioned top speed. I saw 220km/h with a safe amount of breaking room. Could be more with a BBK.
Did some 4WD drifting, car now spins all 4 wheels which was fun but not very good on 19's.
Anyway, look forward to the next 1.

                          • Id recommend gsl rallysport aswell, ive dealed with them before and they were brilliant. I only got my greenstuff pads from the us because I was buying a whole bunch of different stuff and they worked out to be a fair bit cheaper.

I was pushing my car to its limits and would be lucky if I could hit ~155 on the back straight with its 60kw of 1.8 8v fury haha

                            • it was an awesome morning! thanks to Aaron for organising it

i also did a bit of off roading action in T4 on my second lap :p

misjudged the corner and it was a very slippery surface too (thin ice??).

looking forward to the next one

hopefully the Norwell session this saturday will help me learn cornering better

                              • I was seeing early 180's, though not running too heavy under brakes into turn 3, off the accelerator at the 200m marker. Standard size rotors and street pads don't need that punishment.

Clay - turn 2 requires a late apex to get a clean run out. It's much better with the resurface. It used to have a bump mid corner and quite rutted on the way out, upsetting the balance.
