  • QLD Calling for Expressions of Interest - Go Kart Racing

    Fellow Queenslanders

I went out to the Big Kart Track on the fringe of the Sunny Coast last night and had heaps of fun. First time ever been there and on a go kart. Had a couple of spins, but passed a whole heap of other karts in the corners

I had an idea that we could have a VWW event where we cruise up to the sunny coast and head out on the track for an hour (2 x 30 min blocks). If we could get 15-20 ppl, that would be awesome and potentially have some massive egos to boast afterward.

What do you all think? Anyone keen for this?

I'd be keen, but the Karts are too slow there, Archie has decent ones, as much as I love the actual track at the Big Kart Track you can get around it with big toe planted in those ride on mowers they provide. But again, depending on dates etc, I'd be in anyway.

ok cool - shall we ask for dates of when people are free? I am thinking maybe sometime in late February/early March, given that we have the Lakeside day in Jan. Also, do people prefer morning or night? Obviously, if we go night, then it could be a Thurs/Friday or weekend too. We can also open it up for friends/partners etc too as I am told they allow up to 50 karts........

Big Kart Track is $85 for 2 x 30min laps, but the best prize of all is seeing who is the VWW gun driver Maybe we should organise trophies too (can check if we get a big enough group if they will close it off for us and do time trials which they did for a CEO Vs Celebrity event recently...)

Or Kingston Park is also good, but I am told the Big Kart Track is better, as I understand there are heaps of Northsiders here.

Will get the list of people updated.

Hi, I agree with VW imposter, the karts their are slow and not consistent making racing not particularly fun when in a slow kart. I havent done Archerfield, but have Kingston and Ipswich and are much better, worth the added cost. I also think Kingston have Friday night race nights for $100.

kingston is fun, ipswich is closed to public these days, private kart club use only according to the karting apprentice at work. keen for big track & cruise dependant on time/money availability on the day, im a shift worker so cant be sure

also, more of you are doing this kinda thing, join the vwdcq! we neeed active members!!!!!!! the older ones arent scary & some would be keen to play too....

Archerfield is king IMHO, proper nudge start carts that you get an adrenalin boost in by the end of the straight and then need to climb on the brakes and balance not locking up going into the corners and not kicking the back out coming out of it... but in saying that it's a tighter track and may not suit the more relaxed bumper kart style a big group of rookies can become (that's me included), so on that note big kart track is quite good, wish they had the Archie karts I'd go every weekend.

Big Kart Track - the karts are LAME and slow

Archerfield - Last time I went out there they were shut down

Kingston Park - not bad, last time I went there it was raining lightly and the track was mayhem, but oh so much fun being able to drift every corner!!

In short, Archerfield is the best (if it has re-opened) their karts are pretty raw, you really have to drive them. Whereas Kingston is a bit more refined, whilst still being fun, it isn't as involving as the karts at Archerfield. I personally wouldn't go to the event if it was at the Big Kart Track, too far to drive for karts that can be driven full-throttle around the whole track with ease....

I went to archerfield not long ago, it was a great track and the karts were pretty good, but geeze they were unreliable. Like they were made by lada or something. I had problems with over a dozen karts, 8 of which stopped me dead on the track.

Does big kart track have the same thing as kingston and archerfield where if you get a certain laptime, you can get a more powerful kart?

That's a bad run mate! They can be a bit temperamental that's true, but I've personally never had a bung kart there...

FYI - was at Archerfield yesterday and had a look at Archerfield Speed Karts - definitely closed down.
Qld Raceway (who had Ipswich Kart Hire in their carpark) advised me about 3 months ago that the business had closed down.
Kingston and Landsborough have reasonably good tracks. 2 months ago on a trip to Kingston, the karts there had Briggs style 4 stroke utility engines with limiters that make the engine plateau pretty early on the straights. Landsborough karts were similar last time I was there (5 odd years ago)
The speed of the kart is not all that important if you're competing in a group - as it makes you rely on your "race craft" to catch and pass others (unless you're the poor bugger who draws the painfully slow kart)
                          Count me in!
