  • Was a good show, good people, good cars and great weather.

Well done to all those who came, judged, enetered etc. And all the organisers for a great job.

I have a few pints that id like to raise:

    - Why did we need to move to the other side of the netball courts for the presentation, I felt this drew people away form the cars and didnt give it a "involved fell". Im and the other blokes did say it would have been fine to do at at the tent where the t-shirts and club gear was being sold. (I do understand this was a last minute venue)

    - When we arrive it would great to have a list of the classes that you can enter your car in (The lady was even unsure if I was bringing in a VW) I 100% understand that someone with a Kombi doesnt know the difference between a Mk4 and Bora etc.

    - How can a new bettle with a sets of lenso and a ebay muffler beat a Mk4 with a custom body tip, custom paints, 19" work euro lines, smooth and grafted in a Mk5 boot handle and all smooth indicators aerial etc. (I know this sounds harsh but there was some raised eye brows)

I know its hard to please everyone and organising a show is damn hard work.
So maybe next year consider these as the watercooled classes:

    - Best Standard Early Golf Golf (Mk1 and Mk2)
    - Best Modified Early Golf (Mk1 and Mk2)

    - Best Mid Standard Golf (Mk3 and Mk4)
    - Best Mid Modified Golf (Mk3 and Mk4)

    - Best Standard Late model Golf (Mk5 and Mk6)
    - Best Modifed Late model Golf (Mk5 and Mk6)

    - Best other Watercooled (Passat, Bora, Vento, Jetta, Scirocco or Polo)
    - Best New Bettle
    - Best Audi ---------------------- I saw one Audi in the show and counted at least 5 in the carpark

    • i agree, that golf was sex on wheels. so what is classed as modified, in my eyes my golf is modified. coilovers, cross hairs, wheels, exhaust, upper spoiler and chin. it may not have been in your face and the paint me be rough but to me that's modified. the beetle is nice and subtle but does that mean a win, like what water boy said that golf was ten times more modified and custom.
      just my 2cents

If it was the red new beetle, then I'm not surprised - it wins every year so there's no real point in entering in that category. That and not everybody is impressed with the mods on the golf that you mentioned, especially when cleanliness is the criteria.

There usually isn't enough early golfs (esp Mk2s) to have two separate catagories/awards.

And not all aircooled people are clueless about modern cars.

        PS Nice photos Maris.

Mate I have nothing against aircooled cars or people. I own a '58 and '59 bug and if things go to plan with have a splitty panel in my possesion soon. Da owns a '56 oval aswell...

And you even said it yourself that you were not there. Im not having a go just some constructive words. But you could eat your dinner off Alex's Mk4, its juts had a full respray, the car screams OEM plus and has had a packet off effort. And if the red new bug wins every year why dont they spread the love...

OK. This is the last response from. After being run ragged on Sunday, bad night's sleep Sunday night, rest day Monday (we are leaving for WA on Friday, much to do still) then copping another serve last night, with another bad night's sleep, I'm pulling the plug.

            1. I don't know why it was held on the other side. I expected it to be held at the Club tent.

            2. Lucky we had the use of the lady who was unsure of a VW, who is not even a Club Member (but decided to help as she saw we needed it). Usually Mal runs the gate. I don't know what happened there. My 62 YO wife ran around the asphalt all day like a greyhound, however, she is paying for now, and will be for the next week. Because out of 160 members, we get less than 20 to help. Didn't even have enough to run the Club tent.

            3. Yes, make another point for next year to publish the classes (and hope people read it).

            4. The new Beetle won it's class because it conformed with the judging criteria, which as last year was posted on the first post. This was a Show & Shine, so while you may get an extra point for a paricular item on your car, this would not be enough to get you over the line if you didn't meet the judging criteria.

            5. Doubling up the classes may be a way out, but something I don't like. You have no idea how hard it is to get support in the Club for anything watercooled. I have already endured a Mk III entrant ripping into me on Sunday because Mk III & Mk II were joined.

            6. The black Mk IV was in the last 3 for watercooled car of the day, but I felt the paint finish was not as good as the other 2 contenders, having what looked like many buffer trails on the paint.

            7. I remember when the President & I spoke to the vwwatercooled members a couple of years agoat Wigley Res, asked them to join the Club and begin to take over running events like this. No one wanted to.

            8. To 77mk1..it was not sex on wheels, but it could have been (IMO). You have to look beyond the obvious. The more modified and/or custom (the more money spend) doesn't mean a win.

Thank you all for your input, I will pass them on to the Club when I return from the Perth Bug-In.

            • Thanks for the response Maris.

Im more than happy to contact the correct people at the SA Club and have a chat. It would be awsome to bring them up to speed with the watercooled scene.

All best in Perth and hope your dog is on the mend.

                      • great day

Thanks to the organisers for putting on a great show. I loved looking at all the different incarnations of vw. Unfortunately I arrived late so I couldn't join the other golf's and so I sat at the top end of the display. Still had lots of passers by stop and chat which was great.
I do have one question though; how can I find out where I placed or what my point breakdown was so I know what to improve on next year?
