I'm a bit perplexed by your comments. The judging criteria was set out at the beginning, that all entrants would be judged on cleanliness and presentation.
Entrants are not judged on how much their vehicle cost (so because you bought a GTI or R32, you are not an auotmatic winner). Nor are entrants judged on how many modifications they make to their vehicle, once again related to costs.
Maris
While my car was in for the show it wasn't judged as I just don't have the time leading up to an event to clean it to the detail required and I certainly accept that under these criteria there will be FAR more worthy winners on the day. I did make sure that it wasn't a detraction to other vehicles also and did clean it - a bit. lol But conversly I spent many 100's of hours restoring the car from scratch. I would rather do that than detail it. Solely my choice. I am a big picture person and suck at small detail, and I am messy by nature too. Horses for courses. The comments you make on $ value certainly have real merit. But this applies across all classes regardless with prices varying by a factor of x 5 at least based on the year spread needed for 60 years of cars. But I also agree with Robin that it is difficult for clever, unique etc ideas to be rewarded under these criteria - and perhaps they should carry some weight in a modified class as it is the entire basis for the class.
In the same way a more original car should get credit in a class for original cars, as again it is the entire basis for the class . ie a car with a wrong headliner is a big error in an original car class for example.
Nothing is meant as a criticism at all - just a different view for consideration. Truth be known I would only loose a trohy in my mess anyway lol
Again I praise you for the efforts of yourself and Julia - all I spoke to really enjoyed the day greatly and praised the venue.Last edited by mk3vento; 28-03-2011, 06:59 PM.

I would agree that it would be great to take into account any modifications on cars. Will it be necessary then to also split points for entrants who did the work them selves, and how can you prove that, against cars where the mods were done by outside people?
To judge cars taking modifications into consideration would, in my opinion, require something like a hot rod show, where engineering may be playing a big part. That also requires judges who understand the work involved in each entry. We then need to have a process in place that elliminates the personal preferences of judges, so each car is judged on its merits.
It can get all too hard.

I agree with Robins comment and in some respects what Maris has to say as well.
The show has become more than just an air cooled show it once was and I think with the ever increasing number of watercooled cars a different criteria for judging has to be taken into consideration. A different class for each model should be introduced rather than the year brackets currently in place. Concourse judging works well when it comes down to old restored and modified air cooled cars, but the fact I could borrow a brand new MK6 off the showroom floor for the day and enter it into the show and walk away with an award is a bit silly....
People's choice awards seem to be the fairest way of judging cars IMO and maybe this should be looked into as a possibility for future shows as mentioned in the past?
If there was a big enough scene here in SA I would get stuck into organising a watercooled only show as we see in other states and I feel this would attract a larger interstate following much like SEDF does in Victoria.

Hi Lorenz,
1. The clases for the watercooled are based on the Golf years.
2. There are insufficent entries in Mk 2 to warrant a class of its own. Do you put it in with Mk 1 or up with Mk III?
3. New cars may not be as clean as you think they are.
4. People's choice will heavily favour modified cars. Standard watercooled will gradually disappear leaving us with an almost hot rod show.
5. The present criteria gives, I think, the best opportunity to the majority of entrants to go home with a prize.
I would be interested in the judging criteria for the Melbourne DOVW. Certainly after I witnessed the judging in 2009, I had no idea what the judges were looking at/for.
Thanks for your input.

In addition to my slightly grumpy, end of the working day, low blood sugar level comments above....
It's good to see a good turn out despite the last minute change of venue, which, on the face of it at least appeared less than ideal. Kudos to Maris and all those who organise these events. I'm sure it's thankless task done out of love for VWs.
I didn't attend this year, not because I don't support the event, but essentially cos I didn't have the energy or motivation. I had a busy, stressful week culminating in a stressful job interview, blah, blah, blah...
Re the judging - I was a little disappointed when I discovered that cleanliness was the only criteria for an award. I expressed this view last year when I was a judge and discovered just how much work was needed to be 'clean enough' (some of us work every day drive our cars to work). I had some vague notion that 'special' cars might attract more points, but have been a bit disillusioned to find out that only the most obsessively clean cars can get an award and that the same people/vehicles seem to win every year.
But as Maris noted, establishing fair criteria for special cars (not just modded in the way that modern watercooled cars often are) is problematic. And something a little more sophisticated than 'lowest car' would be needed here.
I don't think that modded cars would necessarily always win a 'people's choice' award or that it would drive away the competition. Does the fact that the cleanest of the clean winning each time drive away those with neat but not spotless vehicles? And I think people (spectators who might be allowed to vote rather than just the participants) have broader tastes than to only vote for the most modded.
A watercooled only show is an idea, but it might not get the broad spectrum of VWs and people that attend DOVW. Not every one thinks that VWs have to be modded to be any good.

was a bit dissapointed i didn't get anything for my mk1. to think i lost out cause i didn't have time to clean my windows propperly and wipe down my dash and that my wheels got dirty on the drive down from prospect. all in all was a very good day and it seems each year the turnout gets bigger and bigger.

what happened to the daily driver class maris? considering i will probably never win an award and my intentions of winning one don't really exist, i do however enjoy the vibe of these shows and enjoy displaying my car, even if i'm the only one that gets a kick out of seeing it, i just brought both of my audi's along so i could get some nice pictures of it on the grass next to each other, unfortunately didn't get that opportunity due to the weather but maybe next year
maybe there can be an opportunity to allow people to enter these shows without being judged, maybe for a lower entry fee, (can understand that this might deteriorate the show in some respects, i.e entrants not cleaning there cars enough etc)
maybe we can print of participation awards... for some of those!

Daily Driver Class was still there, and yes, you can enter your car without being judged, and I believe there was a lower entry fee for that. Perhaps a class entry list for next year may help? I must put that on my list of many things to do.

Perhaps one modified class for all watercooled? What is the qualification for that class? But looking at the pics I took, only 2 would have been eligable, both Mk4s, black & silver.
Remembering we had 31 classes this year. What do you think the trophy bill was this year? I don't know either, but we have been over $2000.
