It will happen but not until next summer perhaps. If you guys want to organise something then go for it. Between Dubfest in Feb and the Vic high country weekend in march I dont think there is room for another event on my calendar.
Guys this would be killer but such an event requires substantial outlay...
I would love to do it, but, I imagine the best period would be somewhere in March.
The main reason being, it cannot be winter (for obvious reasons).
Then:
GAF - October
DOVW - November
Dec - everyone is busy
Jan - recovery from Christmas spending
SEDF - Feb
I've done such events once or twice a year with other car clubs and a couple of times solo, mostly just taking a long drive from Sydney to Melbourne or vice-versa.
Skiing lodges are often quite cheap to rent outside snow season and school holidays. A group of 8 to 12 could end up with a nights accommodation for less than $40/hd. Take a sleeping bag and a pillow. I've stayed at lodges in Mt Hotham, Jindabyne and Falls Creek. Dinner at the local pub is usually quite reasonable.
The hardest thing about some of these drives can be getting 98 octane fuel if you need it. A couple of bottles of octane booster fixes that problem.
From Sydney we usually do about 2,500km in 2 1/2 days, heading a few hundred km south on the Friday so that just about all day Saturday and over half of Sunday is spent playing in the mountains.
From Melbourne or Canberra it is easy to start on Saturday morning and spend the night at the above mentioned locations or other towns like Mt Beauty or Bright.
Bright hosts a lot of car club events and has a lot of motels and eating spots. If the size of the group is uncertain, just decide a date and let people book their own place to stay.
These drives are suitable for groups of 1 to 30 but the bigger the group the harder it is to organise and the more time will be lost with stops etc. The ideal size is about 6 cars, preferably with people who are mostly well known to each other.
If you dig a hole and it is in the wrong place, digging it deeper isn't going to help.
I am very familiar with the region too (coming from Canberra and being a 4x4 enthusiast helps
Would be a great adventure, is this going to materialise though?
As for the 98, that is one of my issues, never ran O-boost in the car, is it okay do you think?
When I drove the GTI to Broken Hill via Bourke late last year 98 Octane was non-existent between Dubbo and Broken Hill. I was anticipating this so I took a couple of bottles of Nulon 104 Octane Booster. I've used it before in my old 200SX and the Elise with absolutely no probs. Your exhaust tip will go brown but no harm done.
For cruising on the highway you'd get away without booster but for fanging around the mountains you need it. There are also some small places like Cabramurra where you can't even get 95. I got caught out at Omeo one year when the local servo had even run out of 95 and it is a long way to Bairnsdale to get 98.
One nice thing about the Alps is that they are too far away from the cities and cafes for the suicidal sports bike or Harley riders. Big Jap and Euro touring bikes are pretty common but generally easy to get around.
If you dig a hole and it is in the wrong place, digging it deeper isn't going to help.
