driving through the night is an option, not highly recommended cause you'll be real tired the day after, and the rest of the weekend.

defiantly a bad idea if you're by yourself. imo.

i did the night time trip up to sydney for the weekend once and met a heap of you guys for the wollongong cruise. For those that met me then you can all remember how knackered i was. I certainly dont recommend it.

Also wombats were a very big problem that time of night on that trip for some reason.

tim, were you chasing the wombats by any chance? could that of been the problem? we've heard the stories.............

he's right though! ive done the melb/syd drive so many times its not funny. if you DO intend to go thurs night, i would suggest leave 9-11pm and drive until 3/4am and pass out for 3-5 hours and continue on from there so you wont be completely shattered when you rock into melb!
        What’s behind you doesn’t matter..

Haha yeah I don't want to drive through the night. Starting the drive real early (i.e. even before the sun rises) I wouldn't mind, so we can arrive in the late afternoon/early evening. I hate navigating an unknown place in the dark.

Its one road boys. I`d leave at 1am and have brekky in Melbourne. Thus all the hard navigating is done in daylight and all the boredom of the drive is done under cover of darkness.
I dunno if I`d want to be in a convoy doing 100 for 10 hours with peeps stopping every 10ks. I do 140 on the freeway and have limited stops. I have dome the Syd - Melb run a lot of times and a few times solo, so I know the reality. Do you? Are you really gonna go? No point making plans if half the people dont go.
Not being negative, I`m just a realist.

I second the early morning leave. means you get sleep before hand, and wont be as tired after a nap once you get to melbourne.

Reality is, if you're brave (and have the gearing) you can do 140kph at night. Wombats were an issue for us, although we did see a few dead uns already..

And how many of those are P Platers?

I'm 80% confirmed of going down, reality being how the kids travel (if by plane, with me or at all) that will make my drive different. Chances are I will have a spare seat or two if anyone wants to toy with their life

I have a couple of friends down that way so may have somewhere to stay, but then if everyone stays at the same place I'm sure we just might sit up and share a few drinks

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

what does it matter? i'm happy to sit at 140. P plater or not, you still lose your licence instantly if you're more than 30km/h over anyway.

Very true, but it's not something everyone will want to do, nor I don't think it would be a good idea to plan to do a speed run down to Melbourne...

On another note, really should look into getting my cruise control working before then.

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.
