For what it's worth, the plug is on the pan. And you should absolutely replace the filter every oil change.

Haha, yeah of course. I had thought that all the oil drains from the filter housing and that was the only plug. Ive got one of these ECS magnetic sump plugs on my R and also on the GTI - they are good. They come with a 10x pack of copper washers.
