  • VW Tiguan Inadequate market targeting

I have just had an email from VWA confirming that the VW Tiguan 2.0TSI 147kw will be automatic only with no manual option for the forseeable future.

As such a model (automatic) has no interest to me, I suggest we start a petition to bring a manual 147kw version to Australia.

Anybody interested, please post a reply here.

Maybe you guys looking for 147kw manuals are looking at the wrong model car. If you want 4-motion, manual and 147kw or more what is wrong with the Audi S3 or VW R32. They both fit your spec and will surely be lighter, go faster and handle better than a Tiguan. Or am I missing something.

And also cost 50% more, and dont have high ride height / even less off road ability than the tiguan.

I'll +1 for your petition, given these days you have to order from o/s to get any VW in the spec you want anyway, it should cost barely anything to be done by "special order". It's not like they dontknow how to service 147kW manuals, given how many there are around.

S3 is 2 doors only and the wife wants a new small SUV so the R32 is out as well. It is also the only VW product with the 2.0 TSI and 4motion.

Since I have to drive it occasionally too, I'd prefer it to be something I'd like to drive.

According to the specs from the UK, it weighs the same as the R32 and with a few choice mods (220kw+) will leave it for dead anywhere except a racetrack.

Best of all, with the mods should still be $10K cheaper than a R32 with the added bonus of a bit more family friendly space.

It is a town tractor... what do you expect?
Low range gearing for mad off-road adventures? ...please.
            The marketing is spot on.

lol i agree... even if we get 200 people from this site to write to them, its not gonna do jack because 99% of the people buying htem are going to be choosing between an x5 or an ML or even a touareg. the days of the manual transmission are dying out im afraid

There is virtually no market for this car as a manual and this is only go to shrink more and more.

Was actually talking to someone at VW (in marketing funnily enough) today about Tiguan and there a whole stack due at the dealers soon but if they dont have what you want as far as specs go, expect a VERY long wait...we are talking 6-12 Months depending on specs

Was saying that the waiting list in Europe is about 9 months currently, so expect it to be the same or worse here.

Guy from APR is in the UK at the moment (last I heard) to work with UK APR to see what the difference between the 125kw and 147kw engines are.

Hopefully it is a detuned version only, with all the important bits still there, so an ECU tune should theoretically bring it back up to 188kw (current GTI ECU mod only).

If that is the case, at $34K it will be a steal.... and I will buy one.

Alternatively the new (April) Forrester 2.5T, in manual (....I'm not a lazy driver....) would be the 1 to find a home in my garage.

I'm with Sharkie on this one. My wife wants something with a bit of grunt, but it has to have enough head room in the back for our two labradors. We don't want automatic because, frankly, driving an automatic sux! If the Tigga came with DSG it would be considered (although manual preferred), but an old school auto, forget it!

We don't want it for the "town tractor" aspect, but it needs to have a deep cargo area. It doesn't have to be 4wd or a soft roader. We currently have a gutless Honda CRV because at the time of purchase was the only thing with enough dog head room. Most of the wagons with grunt & a little bit of style (current forester, liberty, outback, secondhand audi s4, passat, the list goes on) all have too shallow of a cargo area.

The only cars that would appear to fit the bill, and keep around the $40000 price bracket would be a Skoda Octavia RS, a manual 147kW Tiguan, or the new forester. If the 125kW Tiguan can be beefed up to 180kW then the search is over!

Having said all this, I don't really think a petition of 3 signatures is going to do much!

I'd assume the 125kw is probably the 1.4?
                        and the 147kw the 2.0?
Not much mention of capacity in their press release.

My GT sport TSi is 1.4/125kw - I can't imagine they'd detune a 2.0 to get those figures. In fact I think I've read someone say the 1.4 isn't enough for the tiguan (UK mag).

Even 147kw seems like a very mild/safe tune for a twincharged 2 litre
i.e. roughly the same as the current 2.0T

Good news that APR are looking into the TSi engines though!
I've been wanting to see *something* come out chip-wise for a while now...

if it is the 1.4, I believe the initial oettinger chip alone was about 150kw..then VW changed the ECU on the TSi

                            The 125kw is actually a detuned 2.0TSI.......

I have spoken to Guy and they will be working hard to determine what has changed to drop output to 125kw. Torque stays at 280NM.

It means that the 2.0 now is available globally in:
125kw (Tiguan, Jetta - USA & UK & Passat UK)
147kw (GTI, Jetta, Passat, A3, A4, Tiguan, Skoda, Seat, etc)
169kw (GTI Pirelli edition - UK & Europe)
                            177kw (Seat)
                            188-195kw (S3)
                            205kw TTR

For 169kw+ it runs the K04 turbo as std as well as other little bits for each iteration.

So long as there are no major changes (read good bits removed) for the 125kw, Guy reckoned it should be able to provide similar outputs to the 147kw when tuned.

We can but live in hope....

oh... I think we're talking about totally different engines then.
Is the Tiguan using TSi (turbo+supercharger), or just a single turbo?
