Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Poly Urethane bushes available from Super Cheap Auto!

I was very surprised to find that I could easily obtain steering rack and other bushes from of all places Super Cheap Auto. They had to be ordered in but it only took a day. The manufacturer is Australian here is their website.

You can download their very extensive 22Mb catalog but to save you time here's the pertinant VW pages.(256Kb)

I'll eventually pick up most of the MK1 bushes and let you know how they work out. The steering rack bushes fit perfectly and were very well made.

I believe they're available from Bursons too, there's other distributors on their website.

      Been using them for years.
Great for street type use as they are not as firm as the yank ones.
Although I prefer the yank ones for track work.

I'd stay away from Poly anything in a street car

Yeah, know all that. The SuperPro ones are softer than the US made ones, they're more designed to be a stock replacement item. Some people recommend them for the street but not for the track.

I need new bushes all round so I thought I'd give these a whirl. If they wear out I'll just replace them with OEM rubber.

My cars don't do many miles per annum and I'm not exactly fussy about luxury ride or being super quiet either.. The car's 30 years old, I'm used to noises!

My guess is they'll be in there for the rest of the car's life and always work better than the 30 year old perished ones that are in there now.

I ran my beetles with urethane engine mounts and torsion bar bushes back in the day, I know what's involved and what the consequences are and I'm silly enough to do it again.

Mostly it's just fun to try these things out.

I was going to go for superpro's when i got my KW's put in. However the workshop talked me out of it for the exact same reason as quoted in that post on vortex.

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.
