  • Dealer Merchandise

When I made the deal on my GTI over the weekend I negotiated some merchandise into the sale. Namely two umbrellas and a 1:43 scale car for my boy. Today they called to say they only have one umbrella and the models have been discontinued. I could maybe ask for the Touareg they had on display, but what would you do? It's on the contract and a small part of me says nail them to the wall. I want my umbrella!

Their range of merchandise is pretty good. Maybe consider a few other items from the catalogue?

Maybe stop being petty about an umbrella and a toy car? Seriously - it's not a big deal.

Petty? Well I'm sure if I tried to alter the deal at all in my favour they would be quick to produce the contract.

Why don't you just wait till they have stock of the umbrellas to get your second one, and ask for the cash equivalent off the contract to cover the model (which you can then track down on eBay)?

If the lack of a $7 umbrella is stopping you buying the car you dont want it very much. Ask for an extra fancy VW keyring Thats all I got and it certainly wasnt written into the contract.

I never said it was stopping me from buying the car, that was the deal that was made. As others have suggested I will just get something else.

I'm thinking the dealer I got mine from must have been raking it in. They were literally throwing merchandise my way when I went it to negotiate a deal for my CC.

Ended up with 2 umbrellas, 6 lanyards, two VW caps and two VW visors. They even gave me a bottle of plonk (Wolf Blass IIRC) the day I went in to pick up the car.

I found it amusing that they had my car under wraps and revealed it with a flourish and handing me bags of merchandise and the wine. Felt like I was on The Price is Right for a bit there....

If I got a top of the range Toureg, I'd probably have had dancing girls and the whole works and a true rockstar reception.

The dealer I got mine from had an A3 wrapped under a velvet cloth with the big enormous bow on top. When I last bought there, they were new and had guys still welding the display room, I got handed keys signed away my money and that was it! Later discovered that day that someone had turned the lights on when they were under something so they had melted the plastic lenses and had to be replaced. Nice to see detailers do a job.

When I picked up my Hyundai Santa Fe which before the Genesis was the most expensive car they sold, I found my car outside in the general display lot, it had been rained on and covered in dust, there were spiderwebs in the front grill and it had a nice dent/paint scrape on the drivers side where someone had opened a display car beside its door and hit it. On top of that they forgot about my trade in so had no cheque and I had to leave my Perfect Cond Mazda 6 there with nothing to show for it. The fuel light came on as I drove out and they said they only put enough in to get to a fuel station. So pretty much I was given the keys and the buck stopped there. I'm curious as to what it will be like picking up my new RS Octavia early next year now the dealer seems over the top.

Merchandise? Toy cars? Bottle of wine? Catalogue of goodies?
Have only been shown brochure relating to car interested in.
Purchased Golf then later on Passat!
But then have to admit had carpets tossed in when went to pickup Golf, plus Extended
warranty on Passat included in purchase price.
But would have liked toy car
