Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Car held in bond ????

    Hi guys,
I've ordered a new golf which should have arrived by now but now the dealer has told me the car is in the holding yard being held by the stevedores in bond.
    What does this mean?
VW is not releasing any info and I'm worried that there may be something wrong with the car even though the dealer says this is not the case.

Normally this is done when there are payments to be made for the import.

      What model is it?

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

        It's a golf alltrack.
Im just worried that it has been damaged and is now being repaired without the dealer telling me.

If it is a brand new car, then the importer would be VW Group Australia, unless the dealer is parallel importing.

Well it's not diesel, so it's not held up in all that potential minefield... although if there was an issue there I figure they would tell you upfront.

They should tell me upfront but if it will cost them a sale because the car has been damaged and repaired them I'm sure they won't be telling me about it.

I'd call BS - likely the car has been ordered incorrectly or there's some issue that they're trying to buy some time.

It would actually be good if they told you the truth but many salespeople prefer to bs you along to keep the sale.

I think you'll find "held in bond" is when Patricks have it in their holding yard.

I had a look in an old dictionary of mine.

From the Dictionary of International Trade Finance Terms, Financial World Publishing, The Chartered Institute of Bankers 2001 ISBN 0-85297-576-7:-

"If goods are imported (or need to be stored during maturity, such as whisky) and import duty is not paid immediately, the goods are placed in a bonded warehouse (i.e. they are held in bond) until all customs formalities are completed."

Not quite an up to date definition, but you get the gist of it.

Thanks guys. Hopefully everything is ok. It's just frustrating not knowing what is going on.
