Suburbs in Melbourne

...and after Eastlink you'd probably get on the Monash to head into the city... so from there it's probably about 40mins to Kingsway.
Slow points on Monash inbound are usually near the Ernst Wanke Rd onramp (uphill), Eastlink interchange (uphill), just before Forster Rd exit (uphill), and Warrigal Rd (temporary loss of 4th lane). Makes you wonder what improvements we'd get if they banned trucks from the right lane like they promised after the Citylink roadworks were finished.

Mate, I'm in point cook and via the west gate it us about 45 mins at 6:15am leaving home... That's on a decent day... Build price out here is around 500k/ 500k buy (in one of the nicest estates in the area) Sanctuary lakes which is right next door pretty much is around the 1 to 2 mill mark

Anyone who says the west should be avoided has clearly never lived/been in the area for a long time and watches too much A Current Affair, Today Tonight, Underbelly, Crime Stoppers ect.

I'm currently looking at buying a house in Melbourne and wouldn't look anywhere but the West, to buy. If I were to rent, which I am now then it would simply be whatever is most convenient to my work/life.

Wouldn't buy anywhere in north, east or cbd. Stayed with a girlfriend out Greensborough way once and the trip into the CBD for work was a killer. Through my journeys as a 19 year old I also found myself making the trip home from the east after nights out, the amount of money they have spent on toll ways there and the commute is still rubbish.

Boronia works for me. Prices and times are about right for your requirements. Very blue collar area on the edge of a light industrial area.

Lots of properties with big garages and driveways. Good access to workshops and engineering supplies.

Not a lot of cultural activities, don't expect any local theater but on the other hand no one cares if you're using an angle grinder at midnight.

There's some nice areas in the west obviously, but a lot more bad. When i first moved to Australia we lived in Footscray. I would definitely not advise anybody to live around there if it's still the same, unless syringe dodging is their favourite thing, which should pretty much be Footscray's local sport.

A couple of blocks from Southern Cross Station on William Street (I think ). At this stage it's all discussions and possibilities, just sussing out options and viability of the whole concept.

As someone who is/was going through this process myself very recently I really liked the Albert Park - South Melbourne area

I'm planning on doing the move south this time next year.. Our budget is max $400 pw, one bedroom min, internal laundry and garage.. I've seen a few listings matching this around South Melbourne, Albert park etc... They were even two within the City itself..

When doing the comparison, it just made me hate Sydney prices even more.

Anyways, glad I saw this thread. I've got a better idea on the layout of the city and what places to avoid lol...

Live in the South East, travel into Melb for work - hate doing it in the car and only travel to work on 2wheels even though melb hasn't done the filter ruling yet.
One car jam/accident can double travel time at least, hence why always 2wheels - don't have to worry about these issues as much.

As someone who has lived in a variety of Victorian suburbs (as well as every state in australia) south east (Glen Waverley) the south (Chelsea) and then in the west (keilor downs) I have to say I hated the west (in fact comparing to living in all areas of Australia I hated the western suburbs of Melbourne the most). I found the suburbs bland you had to go to the city of you wanted to do something and also found a large ratio of **** heads there, it's like there is something in the water. It's kind of odd but you especially notice the aggressive driving habits when comparing the east to the west. Buy or rent in the east or south east

Funny but my opinion is exactly the opposite. I have also lived in many states of Australia as well Watsonia (East Melbourne), Mt Eliza (south east), Essendon (inner north) and Footscray (inner west). When it came time to buy a house I bought in the West, Point Cook to be exact. In 5 years I haven't been into the city for anything. The East is overrated and overpopulated. The only thing missing out here is VW friendly workshops unfortunately however there is one in Sth Melbourne 25 mins away. Go west and get a nice new big house close to the city.
