Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Dashcommand (and alternatives like Torque Pro)

So I've wanted to get into some sort of gauge-ey meter-ey thing for a while and finally bit the bullet and grabbed a bluetooth adaptor and borrowed the brother in laws old Android phone to play with... I've since had to give that back and upgraded to a 7" Galaxy Tab 3 which works brilliantly...

But... a 7" tablet doesn't exactly fit nicely on the dash of the Golf. In the van it isn't too bad, but it has a much (much ) larger windscreen to play with.

So I bought the WiFi OBD adaptor instead and Dashcommand on the iPhone since it has a hard mounted dock already in the car so it's got power and a neat space to sit that's not in the way. But Dashcommand seems to suck out of the box. With Torque most stuff just worked with plenty of gauges to pick from.
With dashcommand there appears to be a more limited range and a lot of them seem to read odd values. Also there is a very noticeable lag vs Torque which was almost instant. I have to assume this is more about the interface than the app.

From my vague readings there should be a way to customise the gauges, although I haven't had time to read up properly and figured I'd ask here first.

So is anyone using Dashcommand? and do you have any hints on setting it up correctly?
Is there a better alternative for the iPhone?

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.
