  • Speed camera locations

I got flashed speeding - I know my fault (along with everyone else who was speeding with me in that well known black spot for accidents).
Was I a little naive when I believed that the Police were honest in publishing the locations of their speed cameras? Their list for today doesn't show the location where I was caught. Is this your experience?

Don't know, never checked. I wouldn't put it past some of the non-police contractors to try and get their quota up by setting up camp in a more convenient spot up the road from where they should be. I've seen them parked at the bottom of steep hills plenty of times.

Well, before a site can be used for a speed camera, laser or radar check, it has to pass a successful site survey to ensure that the results will not be affected by any roadside furniture or signs.

Not only should you get a copy of the ORIGINAL photographs (yes, there is more than one taken), but you should also get a copy of the site survey.

        Damn, hate that...

Last fine I got was $105... Was $105 I could have spent on something else -

Didn't know they publish locations for cameras (I assume you're talking about mobile ones?)... Wonder if they do that here in NSW..

It's a $105 that should teach you not to do whatever it was that you were doing.

Only $105 You were lucky Its $143 and 1 point in QLD and I got caught by a concealed camera in SA a few years ago 14k over $334 and 3 points

Was going into a 1/2 dog town and I didn't see the 50k sign hidden in the trees.

The camera was on a little tripod hidden in the bushes and got me from behind. My own fault but the sign should have been visisble.

Why should they publish the sites If you don't speed anywhere you wont get caught.

I have just bought a HUD so I can see my speed all the time without moving my eyes.

Best thing I ever bought. HUD Speed Display from Polaris

Garmin are coming out with some fancy HUD products (see their 2014 CES demos) which may be worth the wait

I could have had a fancy one with all sorts of readouts but all I wanted was the speed reading.

There is such a thing as too much information and I don't think these new type multimedia units do anything to enhance driver awareness either.

I was taught that driving is a fulltime job and not something you do whilst talking on the phone, resetting the nav, changing Cd's or as has developed the ability to watch DVD's whilst driving.

In fact on a Caravanning Forum one poster asked advice on the best place to put his screen to watch a movie while he was driving on "boring" roads. What a Moron.

The Golf already has plenty of distractions built in, the purpose of the HUD is to move them closer to where your line of sight should be.

I would agree HUD is what I use but then now I have 3 different speeds showing GPS in the multimedia dash unit shows 100 KM the cars speedo shows 104 and the HUD shows 98 it gets its readings from the OBD port . Very bizarre but then you have to make allowances for tyre size wear and then the factory can also be out by + or - 5% . So at the end of the day the GPS is my main one and I get nagging voice if I stray over for more than a few seconds . As for speed cameras etc whenever I stray into enemy territory {NSW} from QLD for work I will enter a small town and just drop the van into 3rd gear and set the cruise for 50kay it just drives itself at a constant speed without any fluctuation . The HUD has some extra little things it beeps if you are over revving whilst going up through the gears also shows fuel usage tacho is shown and a overheat warning , not bad for $75

I wouldn't be complaining too much about that... I get

                        110kph on the analog speedo
108kph on the digital (MFI) dash
                        102kph OBD
                        100kph GPS/radar verified.

An easy way to check is to set your cruise control to 104, then view you average speed readout and hold the OK button to clear it. It'll then show you a more accurate speed.
