Prices for a Service $$$$

I'm new to modern VW owenership,

Got a Pirelli Edition Mk5 DSG.

Looking for somewhere to start servicing in Newcastle NSW. Not to keen on the major dealer due to previous experiences with servicing so looking for an alternative.

Local Audi recommend a $1350 Service. They've based it on the Audi S3 because of the similarities (DSG, Same engine etc..)

They charge $145 an hour, reckon 4 to 5 hours to do the following:

DSG change Oil,
Engine Oil,
Oil Filter
Spark Plugs,
Air Filter,
Pollen Filter (air con)
Fuel Filter.
And I get the courtesy car for the day.

I'm not sure if they were going to change any belts...

What do you reckon? Is that the going rate or is it overly steep.

Agreed, that price is on par for a dealer (or a little less than usual TBH).

I get my Golf serviced at Audi Newcastle and their prices (and quality of service) is far better than Kloster VW. Kloster VW are a joke and i will not go back there unless absolutely necessary.

I gather, due to the number of items being changed that this is your 60,000km service (or another major service interval)? The DSG oil change is a major cost component in that price due to the cost of the oil used. I have used N'cstle Audi for my first 2 services and found them to be quite good - and im pretty damn fussy.

Your car "should" be cheaper to service than an S3 because there is no haldex/rear diff to service on your Pirelli.

Another option you might want to consider is European Car Centre down the road from Audi, near Wickham: European Car Centre - Home . I have a couple of friends who get their cars serviced there (one of them is a MK5 GTi) and they know their stuff. Very knowledgeable team there. Have seen plenty of other VW's in there as well.

I have used both AUDI/SKODA Newcastle and European Car Centre. Both are great. Super professional at both place particularly at AUDI and both know their stuff well. Maybe Euro Car is slightly cheaper than AUDI. Free courtesy car can be booked at AUDI.

I took it to another well spoken of mechanic in Newcastle who had heaps of VW's, but was a bit taken aback when he mentioned that I didn't need the DSG oil changed, and that it was a lifetime oil or 100,000kms. From what I've read this isn't correct, so that put me off taking it to him.

I think I'll stick with Audi then since I'm getting good reports even if I am paying perhaps 20% or so more then at a specialist.

Initially I didn't like Euro cars because they gave me some advice on my previous Alfa Romeo without really investigating the problem. As such I had a negative image. However time has proved that their advice was totally accurate so I regard them quite highly again really. The courtesy car at Audi has swung it for me though. First time I've been offered a courtesy car in about 5 years, so pretty pleased with that.

Yeah, theres an odd mentality amongst some of the independents in regards to DSG servicing.

The 6 speed DSG gearbox used in the Pirelli GTI is most definitely due to have its oil and filter (5.5L or so of oil and a little filter on top of the gearbox) changed at 60,000km or 4 year intervals (whichever comes first). The price to service the DSG will be far cheaper than repairing it when it goes bang from being un-serviced.

Was the other mechanic Denstoj at Carrington? I can't think of any other mechanics in Newcastle who i could trust to service the VW's.

This other Guy I went to is very well thought of generally so I don't want to blag him on the internet, everyone's entitled to their own opinions but 100,000kms sounds a bit excessive to me for a gearbox with a couple of wet clutch inside it. Having recently had my DSG service done, you can feel the improvement. I'd almost be inclined to do it even more regularly than VW recommend. Definitely not less.

60k service for a GTI should cost you about $1200-$1400 through a dealer. I paid $990 but I get fleet discount (trade price). The DSG oil is about $90/L and they go through 5-6 liters.
