If you wanted a small hatch, you didnt look at an audi.
Things were different back then - not every manufacturer had an option in every market segment - e.g. you couldnt buy a "4wd" from BMW, mercedes, audi, vw etc. You couldnt buy a hatchback from BMW or mercedes. You couldnt buy a softroader from anyone, and porsche certainly didnt sell 4 door cars.
Now its very different. You can pretty much buy any type of car from any manufacturer, just about.

While I agree that this is broadly correct, it is not 100%. Mercedes released the G-wagen in the '70s, and VW began prototyping 4wd Type 2s in the late '70s - but I'm not sure when they were released.
