Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • 80s and 90s Audi Hot Hatch

    Golf had their GTi...

I'm not old enough to remember...but during those two decades...did Audi have anything in that segment?

Does the Audi S2 count as a hatch?

Audi had the quattro - the S1 and then the S2.

If you wanted a small hatch, you didnt look at an audi.

Things were different back then - not every manufacturer had an option in every market segment - e.g. you couldnt buy a "4wd" from BMW, mercedes, audi, vw etc. You couldnt buy a hatchback from BMW or mercedes. You couldnt buy a softroader from anyone, and porsche certainly didnt sell 4 door cars.

Now its very different. You can pretty much buy any type of car from any manufacturer, just about.

Also, a hatch today is as big as a medium or even large car was 20 - 30 years ago.

Lancia Delta Integrale would probably be my pick for a 80's hot hatch.

While I agree that this is broadly correct, it is not 100%. Mercedes released the G-wagen in the '70s, and VW began prototyping 4wd Type 2s in the late '70s - but I'm not sure when they were released.
