Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

      • Dug this one out of the archives last night. It's an R32 GT-R competing in a hillclimb at Mount Panorama. I think I took it in 2006

If you want to play without paying $XXXX, maybe try this...

I did it when I got my first SLR (10D) to learn a bit about creative photography.

Basically you buy a Canon adaptor for old non-autofocus lenses for <$50 (I paid $20 ages ago) and then use it with old lenses at mega apetures.

135mm 1.8 apeture... I had a box of lenses including this one given to me by rellos.

              • Ahhh, sounds cost-effective for sure - are those old lenses the models with the FD designation? I see a lot of them for very low prices on eBay...

                • Yeah man, $50 including shipping from Hong Kong.

You can sometimes find primo ones that have gold af sensor points on the adaptor.
Those units won't make the old lens autofocus (can't without an motor in the lens) but they will give AF-lock confirmation using the red light and *beep* which is very useful.

Relying on your eye to focus is a tricky art!

Been meaning to get one of these for my DSLR for ages, definately worthwhile as people are often selling quality old MF lenses for dirt cheap.

By the way is it okay to post some Photoshopped images in this thread?

                    • Yeah I tend to rely on AF a bit too much. Usually I end up scrapping a fair amount of shots due to subjects being out-of-focus. Astigmatism sucks

The photos I took above were photoshopped slightly (cropped, resized, slight contrast/brightness adjustment).
