my best lightning shot was just a lucky click.

wish i had more time to get some pictures with my eos.

I may be cheating... I've tried the "lucky" click a few times but with no hope. So I gave up and kept it open for about 10 seconds

Yeah you have to get very lucky with lightning shots if yorre not using longer exposures. Nearly got frazzled in qld a few years back trying to photograph a wicked storm.

The strike was about 40 meters away on a power pole.
Scared the living crap out of me.

These shots hurt the eyes! You either aren't using a tripod or don't use a timer when taking a shot like this!

Lol I don't know the first thing about taking photos BUT I was using a tripod. It's a crappy little thing that's not very stable so I might have to invest in a better one. Timer? It's ok, I'm getting a mate to go through and teach me everything there is to know about taking photos and how to do it right with a DSLR

Maybe use the two second delay timer while on tripod? It eliminates shutter jerk.
