Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Yeah, the pony was more for show, and sound rather than the go factor.

it was still LHD, and in very good nick too unrestored original condition.
it was very much underdriven, but it sounded sweet as.
it was a small block 289 Windsor too.....

      • Got a few questions?

When on 'M' for Manual exsposure what sort of shutter speed do people use for the tail ligh shots?

When taking night photo's what mode to use?

Also what is the best mode if I just want to take a good clear photo of my car?

        • Hey James, what camera do you have? I've found that manual is very fiddly to use and usually opt for Aperture Priority (Av) or Shutter Speed Priority (Tv) mode. They're kinda semi-manual as you can either control your aperture or shutter speed and the camera will determine the other value to ensure pics with good exposure.

When taking night photos, you really need a tripod to get decent pics if you don't have a good flash set-up. You would use Av mode and opt for a high aperture to turn bright lights into nice little stars. For normal hand-held use, go for Tv mode, and select shutter speeds > 1/30" so you won't get bad motion blur. Play around with ISO values - remember, a low number gives low light sensitivity but better quality. Always use the lowest ISO value unless you need to compensate for bad lighting.

Best thing to do is test out your camera in all kinds of light!

Thats pretty well said Ray, just replaced the lens on my 20D, which seemed to be the problem I've been having with it, just been playing with mine and taking some low light shots as well.

X2 on the tripod its pretty hard to keep your hand steady for anything less than 15 or 20 on the shutter speed.

              • my fog exposures were done with a monopod braced against something (tree for example), very low aperture and a shutter speed around 10 - 15 seconds.

i need to buy a tripod! lol

                • it depends what effect your after if your after the ever popular head light stream effect at a busy intersection , leave the apeture open for as long as you like with a tripod.

                  • I think you mean leave the shutter open... Aperture is a setting that lets less light in (high number) or more light in (low number).

If you're going to leave your shutter open for the light trail effect, you want to make sure you're aperture is set very high. You may also need a filter for headlights depending on the angle of the shot and how fast the cars are travelling.
