Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • HI Guys,

My other, other hobby, apart from VW drooling and photography, is military modeling. Written a couple of books on it too - it's nice to have the hobby sort of pay for itself after all these years.

Where ever possible I try to base my model upon wartime photos of the real thing, in this case, a German Panther tank, abandoned in France in August 1944.

    The real thing:

    The model in progress:

    Ant the finished item:

Images taken with a Nikon D80, with AF Nikkor 18-135 lens.

    PS love the Herc shots!

    • Fantastic models! How long would it take you to make a similar model? And what's the scale for that specific model in your post?
      Past: Mk3 Golf 2L 8V, Audi 8L A3T.
      Present: Mk3 Golf variant.

      • I'm massively into model making too...I thought I may have been the only one on here after starting a thread a while ago...You model looks amazing. I have been into Military Model Making for over 20 years, but unfortunately I don't think I am up to your level of modeling!! I am mostly into dioramas. I am lucky in that I have access to many of real life references(Like in the case of the M113A1 MRV), and it is also a tax deduction for me too!! These are some of mine...

                • Great models Phil...I have a real thing for the Sea Fury and the Whispering Death...I am working on an Aussie on at the moment too, and a French Navy F4U7 Corsair. Are they all in 1/48th scale?

The P 38 is the old monogram 1/32, the rest are 1/48 (my preferred scale)

The hellcat, wildcat & beaufighter were photographed by Brett Green of Hyperscale.

                    • Hey Cupra,

Great models - funny, I was going to comment on your images too - really professional and similar to the one Brett takes for his articles on Hyperscale - and bingo he's the one taking them!

Great job - you should give armor a go - its the new black!

                              • Just got my free Crumpler bag from Canon as part of a promotion when I got my camera. I'm surprised, it's actually decent!

And tried my best with this - handheld @ ISO1600. Wished I had the tripod around:
