Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

              • you need to start using manual dom to get the full benifits of that lens in my opinion, read up about it and learn i can help you out if you have any queries

where did you source the 85mm its next on my list, gives you that extra distance between you and the subject something i feel helps sometimes

                            • the first and easily the most important thing about shooting slr is to have a good understanding of what the lens is doing.the lens takes in light and records a picture, simple you say but it can read the light in a lot of differnt ways, resulting in very different results

the most important thing for me is to understand and use to your advantage the f stop.the f stop reads the amount of light and information a camera receives.the lower the f stop ie f/1.8 the faster a lens is.so small f stop eqauls fast lens larger the f stop slower the lens.so with a fast lens (set on f/1. the lens is wide open so a lot of light is flooding in, making the shutter movment quik,as the receiving of the information is quik the focal area is small or smaller.the lower the f stop the tighter you can get your depth of field.as you move the f stop up it changes the time the shutter stays open to record it message and increases the depth of field(dof) .so fast ie low f stop(f1.8 or 1.4 if you have heaps of cash)makes the shutter quik and dof small ,slower higher f stops makes the shutter slower and larger dof.

so from this you can see that a quiker lens setting is better for lower light as the shutter movment is quiker so less prone to camera shake than higher f stops but if you want a full or deeper focal area you need to close up increase your f stops

thats a start you have lots more that goes into it which i will get to
