Very interesting about the mazada reliability stuff. I was considering looking at the 6 and 3MPS. Prompts me to do some more research for sure.

Not 100% with you on resale though. Mums Corolla is only worth 10-12K. A similar condition, year, kms etc mk V would be worth similar money (if not a touch more). Purchase price wouldn't be too dissimilar either. Either way, resale value isn't a major concern of mine. And comments regarding driving also interesting. (I've driven more post 30K VW's than under recently)

I believe that (generally) japanese interiors aren't as nice as can be. (nothing wrong, but they just dont 'feel' very nice) hence why there is a fair chance that I'll probably stick with the germans.

And servicing isn't a big issue, I know people. and well, it's a fact of life. One of the main reasons I'm looking for such a 'new' car, is so that I don't have to perfom maintenance tasks (ie; not servicing stuff) for some time.

I will be keeping an quiet eye on the 'Roks though, even if I'm not too keen on driving a base spec commercial vehicle.

Personally wouldn't buy a 3 atm as its starting to show its age unless you want a bargain when the new model comes out

Mazda 3mps is a real fun car and quick with relatively cheap mods

TBH even a base spec Amarok has lots of goodies and a VW feel to the interior ..... and the TSI has the MK6 GTI engine ..... with all that can develop into. Be a cracker in SC with a tray and taken to Stg2 ..... .... and as a bonus a RNS510 and BT is plug and play!

And I have seen new TSI SC's for less than $25K driveaway ......

And to see what you can get for that money ... http://www.vwwatercooled.com/forums/...k-75477-3.html

TBH, If I got an Amarok, I'd have to be 4x4. I've practically got no need for a ute, and it would be hard to justify 2wd as a 'lifestyle' vehicle (Same reason I'm not buying a V8 Ute, amongst others). We'll see what the pricing is like in a few months time, if the 4x4 drop down in price, I'd definately be more inclined to fork out a little bit extra to get one. (I've always wanted a 4x4 to go bush)

Good to know about the interior, as I havn't spent more than a couple minutes with my head through the window previously. Also good to know about the upgrade potential

Depends what you want, bought a brand new Octavia for less than $20K drive away, plenty of deals now with the run out.

Octavia for sure. BTW Mazda 3 won't outlast any VW as one poster said. I just got rid of my Mk 3 Golf at 370,000k. VWs will always last longer than a Mazda though they may cost more over time. As for resale, VWs hold their value well. For 20k an Octavia is hard to beat.

Me and the mrs are in the same situation - we're looking at 2008 A3 2.0T Quattro manuals - there's some with about 60k on the clock for $20k.
