Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Technology isn't always faultless or trouble-free, which is understandable because it takes time to refine & tweak designs and iron out problems, but it was ultimately Volkswagen's decision to release the technology onto the market in its current state of development.

Irrespective of whether that decision was premature or not (I suspect it was), they should take responsibility for their decision and be willing to provide support & backup to the customer without fuss - this IMO was arguably their biggest failing.

Pro tip - "without fuss" does not mean being dragged by the consumer and the media, kicking and screaming, all the way to the government's office for a recall.

There will be people who are prepared to deal with the gearbox's idiosyncrasies, which is fine so long as they understand what they're getting into.

The problem is, Volkswagen (or Ford) isn't the only player on the automotive landscape, so for those who want to purchase a passenger car that can deal with traffic jams or don't want to continually offer sacrifices to the gearbox gods, they'll simply look elsewhere.

    • Hey have most of you received that email from the CEO? I've got a MY10 R36 and still haven't received anything as yet

If you have issues, probably better to get active and call the hotline - 1800 504 076.

        • Hey Mark, no issues yet in the 3 years I've had the car. Based off the car list that is affected I just assumed I should have been contacted.

Good to hear that you have no issues.
For your R36, it may not have been part of the recall that is targeted at cars with DSG DQ200.

            • Been a R36 I would assume you have the 6sp Wet Clutch which has not been recalled.

There has been a very small number of problems with these gearboxes (clutch shudder, mechatronics issues) but nowhere as big as the 7sp dry clutch which is why they were recalled.

              • Thanks for the clarification lads .. read about the DSG DQ200 but wasn't sure if that was the 6 or 7 speed

I have noticed mine on the odd occasion when its cold that 1st to 2nd is pretty rough. One time it actually had a pretty loud bang on upshift. Has been the only thing so far that has warranted any concern. Will need to get it looked at on next service

                • The gearbox numbers are in order of the amount of torque they can handle.

                  Dq200 (250nm) - polo, jetta, golf
                  Dq250 (350-400nm) - golf GTI/R and most diesel models
                  Dq500 (500nm) - Tiguan, Multivan

Banging could be caused by the calibration been out (as they sometimes tend to do) or that the oil has started to break down and the viscosity has changed from the original spec causing it to be a bit thick (or too thin) when cold caused by normal operational usage.

How many km have you done? I know at 60,000km they replace the gearbox oil and filter for this reason. If its only doing it at start up or a little bit I wouldn't concern yourself as much. If it does it every gear change/take off I would be getting it looked at.

                  • hi there,

my golf 118tsi with DSG was bought brand new in 2010 which falls in the recall range, so far it's ok except two potential problems
                    1. car is shuddering at low gear
                    2. shuddering noise after hot start(restart the car after parked for a while). noise last few sec then gone.

not sure if it's from clutch or gearbox, do u guys think i need to call 1800 number? or just wait for the recall letter
because apart from that, no prob at all.

32,000kms. Yeh I haven't worried "too" much about it since it happened as it's a rare occurrence. I still will mention it when I get it serviced. Due for my 3 year now.

Speaking of servicing and without going too off topic - has anyone taken their car to Volkwerke in Greensborough (VIC)? I've taken the car to the dealer for both services (bent over both times) but thinking of going there from now on.

                        Hey man,

The shuddering in first gear is the clutches. Pretty easy fix and well known about. Just demonstrate the suddering to the dealer as they will replace it.

With the rattling you "could" have the same issue as on the Polo GTI's (as they use the exact same twin charged engine) the rattle comes from a fault in the camshaft positioner for the VVT. It rattles for 2-3 seconds after the engine is started. It would be a good place to look.

Audi has the A1 and A3, Skoda the Octavia and Superb.

                          No real surprise there.

                            • Alex, from what I can gather the problems were 'fixed' before Fabia's starting to come to Australia. Boy I really hope that's the case since I pick up my new one is a month or two.

Well for your sake, I hope so! But hasn't the Fabia been here for a while now?
